Cell4soul Report post Posted July 3, 2017 This coming season will be my first to hunt with a muzzle brake. For those of you that have hunted with one, are you using hearing protection? If so, what type, which brand, how do they work, etc.? I looked at the Soundgear and a couple others, but dang those are expensive.
Big Browns Report post Posted July 3, 2017 I have a muzzle brake on all my hunting guns. I personally carry foam ear plugs. I carry them in my pocket most of the day. Once I start setting up my gun for a shot I put them in. Firing a shot without some sort of hearing protection can be very harmful to your ear so ensure you have something.
rossislider Report post Posted July 3, 2017 I use hearing projection while hunting with all my rifles, muzzle brake on not. I know too many guys in the generation or two a head of me with hearing issues that contribute much of it to not using sufficient ear protection when shooting or hunting. I carry the little foam ones or the little plastic ones on a string in my bino case which is always on my chest. You don't need anything fancy. In 95% of the shots people SHOULD take, there is plenty of time to put the plugs in. Not worth the risk. I would definitely wear them.
Couzer Report post Posted July 3, 2017 Good luck, hopefully you remember to put them on before the shot, I always forget 👍
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted July 3, 2017 I used the ear pieces on a string last year. I keep about 5 pairs around me at all times. This year for my wife and myself I'll be using electronic muffs. That way direction/instruction/hit and miss calls can still be given in a whisper, but heard and understood by the shooter. cjl2010 Report post Posted July 3, 2017 I keep 2 pairs of these in my guide lid. When I'm making the final stock I put them on my hat and when it's time to shoot they are already on my head so I pull them down and good to go

When I'm making the final stock I put them on my hat and when it's time to shoot they are already on my head so I pull them down and good to go I like this style as well. I usually have them around my neck all day. I can probably count on one hand every time I fired a weapon without hearing protection. Unless you have a silencer ALWAYS use hearing protection.

AZ8 Report post Posted July 4, 2017 I think of all the dove and quail I've shot at over the past 40 years or so without hearing protection. 1,000's of shots! Makes a person wonder "what if?" 24/7 tinnitus sucks! And the hundreds of rock concerts didn't help either. I'm much smarter now, but the damage is done.
wildwoody Report post Posted July 4, 2017 I like walkers game ear muffs, with sound enhancing, especially turkey birds
rossislider Report post Posted July 4, 2017 Question about the Quiet Bands? Do you smash and squish the ear pieces down and let them expand in your ears like traditional foam ones, or do they just slip in your ears? I've thought about giving them a try. cjl2010 Report post Posted July 4, 2017 Question about the Quiet Bands? Do you smash and squish the ear pieces down and let them expand in your ears like traditional foam ones, or do you just push them in? I push them in firm and that usually is enough to squish em and let em expand.
AzDiamondHeat Report post Posted July 4, 2017 I just push them. They seem to seat very well so no need to squish them. But we all have different ears.
rossislider Report post Posted July 4, 2017 One suggestion, decide where in you pack or on your person your ear protection will be kept, and never deviate. The same goes for all equipment you will need in the heat of the moment. If it is always in the same spot, you can grab it quick and instinctively. You don't want to be having to rummage through all your gear when you should be watching your target. It took me way to long and to many screw ups to figure this out.
