MULEPACKHUNTER Report post Posted June 23, 2017 As I made my way off the mountain today I came upon the Granite mountain hot shot memorial park. I decided to make my way to the area where theses gentlemen lost their lives. Not sure what made me stop, been by many times but something pulled me this time. Wouldn't you know I took off from the parking lot while 2 fire crews were coming down from paying their respects. I stopped along the trail and nodded to each man as he passed. Along the switchbacks there are memorial plaques for each hot shot explaining who they were. The trail is very well done and tough. Straight up Yarnell hill for 2 plus miles before leveling off and finishing 2.8 at the overlook of ground zero. I felt like I shouldn't be walking around at the actual site so I stayed up top and spent some time looking down and picturing what happened. It was a sobering moment. I recommend making time to drop a donation at the trail head and even making the climb to the site, it's a tough little hike no doubt but doable for most when it's cooler out. Props to those who worked on this project , I was very impressed , amazing job. I'll be back soon. CatfishKev Report post Posted June 24, 2017 Did these guys know what was coming ahead of time? Did they have time to write notes to their wifes and kids etc.? Cant imagine what that would be like.. Id just want my family to know how much I loved them. The scariest thing about death for me is the wound it would cause my family, especially the kids.. That's rough right there.
