257 STW Report post Posted June 13, 2017 I am building a rifle for my 10 year-old she starts hunting big game this year I am leaning towards a fixed Power Scope the scope I am looking at is a SWFA SS 10x42 fixed powered. I am leaning towards a fix power Scope due to the eye relief issues with the younger kids I seemed to have this problem with my older kids when they were younger any input or of Scopes selection or experience with the scope I listed would be greatly appreciated thanks. The rifle is a 260 Remington model 700. I am mainly looking for fixed Power Scope options as I have other quality Scopes I could put on her rifle
lancetkenyon Report post Posted June 13, 2017 Too much magnification for closer shots or fast target acquisition. I would do a 3-9 before I did a fixed 10x myself. What is your budget? Don't get me wrong, I love SWFA scopes. I have 2 on my 10/22s. 3-15×42s.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted June 13, 2017 I also agree with Lance about a lower power. I would also choose a less busy, bolder/thicker reticle.
257 STW Report post Posted June 13, 2017 Budgets not an issue I just want to make sure I put the right piece of glass on there so that she's comfortable that's why I'm looking at fixed Power Scope and just trying to see if anybody has experience with any certain brand there's not a whole lot to choose from when it comes to fix power and in my research the swfa had the best reviews and was the only one with an exposed turret that I could find I do have a few high-end Scopes in the safe that I could put on there but the eye relief always seems to be a challenge with the younger kids in my experience
hunter72 Report post Posted June 13, 2017 The fixed power 6x Leopold scope is a great scope.the field of view is great and also the eye relief.
stanley Report post Posted June 13, 2017 +1, hunter72! My kids all used 6X fixed for my kids when starting out. Was easy on target acquisition and seemed like a good 'trainer' set-up. Had a nice Leupold that I picked-up as a demo. Something like this: https://www.leupold.com/hunting-shooting/scopes/fixed-power-riflescopes/fx-3-6x42mm/ Good luck! S. AZHunter1 Report post Posted June 27, 2017 I myself like the Nikon 3x9x40 for the kids. Low enough power you can still get on target quick at short range and able to bring'em in closer when they are out a little bit.
