Non-Typical Solutions Report post Posted May 15, 2017 Have always wanted to check out the Pacific Coast Highway and seriously considering dragging the little camp trailer and checking it out this summer. I have never ventured into the camp trailer find a spot to park program and wondering if anyone has recommendations regarding that particular trip......maybe start at Ventura and end at Crecent City??? Is that too much, doable......Crazy yes but still want to try!!!
Edge Report post Posted May 16, 2017 It's a long haul, lots of tiny coastal towns and switchbacks. I'd recommend the Reagan Library and Hearst Castle for sure. You probably won't get more than a couple hundred miles at the most per day. My son's home is right on CA-1 in Pacifica. Take your fishing pole.
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted May 16, 2017 Haven't driven it as far as your planning but when I have (work reasons and hated it!!) I never looked for places to out a trailer. What I saw was limited parking and a butt load of traffic. Maybe a weekday would be best and if you had to sleep in a CVS parking lot then so be it. Sorry I'm not much help
singleshot Report post Posted May 16, 2017 I moved my sister to Seattle in March, put my truck on the Bremerton ferry and then drove down coastal Washington, Oregon, and to Trinidad California. It rained a lot but very little traffic. I understand that during the non raining months traffic can be brutal. It takes a lot longer than you would think, like Edge said, lot's of small towns and lower speed limits. The Tsunami warning signs everywhere kind of freak you out. It was a really nice scenic drive though.
ThomC Report post Posted May 16, 2017 I drove it in the summer of long ago from Portland to San Diego. I found no places to camp along the ocean. I would never do it during the summer. Too many people. If I was in charge I would wall off so, cal. and let it fall off in to the ocean.
HyNoon Report post Posted May 16, 2017 Well if your trip allows for it, you can camp on the beach in San Luis Obispo at Pismo Beach. Not too sure about the rest of the way, as I drove straight there. Morrow bay is a neat place to check out while there if you end up making it that far north.

Benbrown Report post Posted May 17, 2017 We have friends that live just off of it at Carmel. They say that because a lot of lesser roads have suffered storm damage this winter, the highway is clogged with traffic. It takes them at least an hour and a half to make a trip to the nearest grocery store. They just flew in here today, so I will try to get an update for you in a day or so.

n2horns Report post Posted May 18, 2017 This is a good time as summer appraoches lots of the RV / trailer camp spots get taken up quick. I think leaving from the Malibu are going north on 1 is the best best scenic route and you get into nice ocean views and into good spots for food , beer and views like Santa Barbara, Hearst Castle, Solvang (Danish village) good to see once. Cool spot someone mentioned is Regan Library in Simi Valley, quick jaunt off PCH. If you have time stop and fish out of Ciscos Sport fishing in Channel Island/Oxnard, and take the ErnaB. Have fun and see a bunch.

biglakejake Report post Posted May 24, 2017 u waited too long. coast hiway fell into the ocean saturday..... Massive rockslide buries stretch of iconic California highway Published May 23, 2017Associated Press BIG SUR, Calif. – A major new rockslide has buried a stretch of California's iconic Highway 1 in up to 40 feet of stone and dirt, the latest hit in a soggy winter of slides, floods and road closings along the winding Central California coast road, state transportation officials said Monday. A swath of the hillside gave way in an area called Mud Creek on Saturday night, covering about one-third of a mile of road and changing the Big Sur coastline immediately below, a spokesman with the California Department of Transportation said.
