elpepe25 Report post Posted November 9, 2007 I have a little honey hole i have been watching for a couple of years now but never hunted it, i knew it had potential for some decent deer because ive seen a few that have came out during the previous couple of years rifle hunts. I put in for the rifle hunt as another excuse to go hunting/scouting and to check out the quality for this winters hunt. Also my girlfriend just got a bow last christmas and was itchin to shoot a deer. so i set up a ground blind with all the great advise i got from this forum. I had seen this buck during my one day to hunt during the archery hunt a coupla months ago, and close like 15 yards but the dense cover prevented me from putting an arrow in him then. there was another couple of bucks with him in the 70/80 class and i thought this would be perfect for my girlfriend. So i kept an eye on the spot and checked it every week or so, while putting out game cams ect. I was getting no pics of him or his buddies all the way up to the rifle hunt. So opening morning i found myself sitting in a pop up ground blind w/ my girlfriend tryin to find her a buck to shoot at. well the blind was a little small for the both of us and we put in for this hunt so she could shoot a buck so i packed up my gear and went off on my own to glass, shed hunt and stay outta her way. she had does coming by every day but no bucks. this continued for the next 2 days of the weekend. She had to go back to school and work on monday so i spent that day regrouping and regearing up to go out by myself tuesday. Tuesday morning i had a hard time getting outta bed because i knew what was ahead, a 45 min drive, a 2.2 mi hike in and a day of boredom in a sweltering ground blind, but i managed to pull it off, and made the 2.2mi. hike in barely on time. The day was HOT and LOOOOOOONG with not much action at all but i kept telling myself it would happen. at about 12 i got out to stretch my legs and swap the batteries and card on my game cam. quietly i got back in the blind and went to work on readying the cam to solve my boredom. i had my external card viewer and got to looking at the card i had in there for last week and BAM, bucks like crazy. i had like 5 diff. bucks traveling that route, and a bobcat to boot. so now i was really pumped. at about 5 pm my 2 does and 2 faws came by like clockwork. i was enjoying the show and only had about 30 min of light left to shoot. then all the sudden My buck stepped into view in my shooting port. i slowly quietly reached for my bow. He started walking right toward the blind the stopped. A chest on shot is no dice for me even at the 15 yard away he was. and boy i was shaking. then he stomped like he was alrmed, turned quickly and walked away............. i was sunk. twice now i had this deer inside of 20 yards and had yet to draw my bow. about 5 mins later a 70" ish buck walked by at 17 yards followed quickly by a slightly larger buck, still no shooters. and then HE came back, dead broad side, 20 yards on the money. i still had my bow in my hand form a couple of mins ago. i went into auto pilot trying not to look at horns. dead focused on 1 spot, behind the shoulder. i drew my bow and achored solid and tried to burn a hole in his ribs with my 20 yard pin. i dont remeber squeezing the trigger but suddenly there was an expolosion and i watched my motec tipped easton blow through him as he tore off for the thickest cover in the area. Now i thought i was shaking before the shot.......but you woulda thought i was epileptic after the shot. the realization hit me like a ton of bricks..........i had just connected with my best buck. i still had no idea what he would score but it didnt matter any more. the 30 min wait in the blind b4 starting the blood trail was the toughest 30 mins of my life. i exited the blind and went over to where he was standing at the shot and found a great start on my blood trail. i went and found my arrow and graet sign all over it. my arrow had zipped though him and went 30-35 yards out the exit wound into the woods. so i started on the blood trail. i had an awesome walking blood trail for 40 yards. the kind where you dont look for blood you just walk becuase it s everywhere. then at the end of it the were marks like he had locked up and skidded to a halt. no more blood. the grass and brush were eyeball deep. and i had lost the blood trail after only 40 yards. so i started doing little circles at the last blood sign and after 15 mins coundnt come up with any more. no tracks no blood. i went back to the skid marks and last blood to try again and for some reason i looked off the right side of the trail and there he was augered into a dense mesquite. There was no ground shrinkage here. By now it was real dark, im by myself, in illegal country, 2.2 miles deep as amatter of fact and i couldnt be happier. after a few quick pics with the self timer on my tripod, i was off to work. a friend gross scored him at 102 6/8 thanks for reading and thank you all for all the support and help on this forum. good luck on your upcoming hunts
