Noel No jealousy here. I am as "Tucson" as they come and I fully support the Suns and Dbacks because they are competitive and fun to watch. (Probably the same reasons why you watch UA Basketball) The Cardinals have been a JOKE, and their management refuses to improve the team. Cards will get my support if/when they put a decent product out on the field...they did move out of ASU's stadium into a giant "Air-Stream" Trailor, so I will consider rooting for them in the future. SunDevil Report post Posted November 2, 2007 here is an oldie but a goodie - my two favorite teams are ASU and whoever is playing ua. seriously - I did not use to be this way but it has come to this after living in Tucson for 11 years and being subject to unnecessary abuse from a lot of ua fans. the sad thing is that their rudeness (ua fans) is not just towards ASU. it is directed towards fans from all other schools. I am sure this happens everywhere but I live in Tucson so I am talking about ua fans right now. the worst instance was last year when my 2 nephews flew out from VA to watch the BYU - ua game. they were 11 and 14. we were walking down the mall to a friends tailgate and were berated by someone in about every other tailgate group because we were wearing BYU shirts. the saddest part was when 3 kids who were probably 5 - 7 years old walked over and started chanting 'BYU SUCKS - BYU SUCKS' over and over again. what is even sadder is that their parents were standing right there watching the whole thing and did nothing about it. the next day when I was driving my nephews to the airport, the youngest one asked why the ua fans were so mean. he also said the ua fans were the worst he has EVER encountered. these boys have been all over the country to see BYU games (Boston College, Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, etc). one instance I still can not believe or will ever forget is when I was at the ASU - ua game in Tucson one year and was wearing my ASU jersey, this little squirt of a teenager starts laying into me about how ASU sucks. I am a pretty big guy so I just laughed it off but I turned to his overweight squirt of a father and told him he needed to teach his son some manners or someday he was going to run his mouth to someone who wouldn't let it slide and probably end up with a broken nose. I thoroughly enjoyed it 2 years ago when I was at the ASU - ua baseball game in Tucson and a couple ua fans were being so obnoxious that security actually kicked them out of the game. so my question is - why must people be derogatory? when I was a kid playing sports we encouraged our team and if we put down the other team we did not get to play and had to run. unfortunately there are sports talk radio stations I do not listen to anymore because I have heard enough references to my alma mater as 'tempe normal' and other djays I do not listen to because of their continued reference to our mascot as scumdevils. so yes - ASU faces a tough opponent this week but they also faced a tough opponent last week and while ua was battling it out with UW for the basement of the conference, ASU was taking care of business against cal. hopefully the logic that cal beat oregon and ASU beat cal will translate into ASU beating oregon. we shall see tomorrow afternoon. fortunately for the ua, they belong to a good conference and share in the spoils from the other pac10 schools as money from the bowl games goes to the conference and then gets distributed to all the schools, including those sitting at home during the holidays playing in the toilet bowl. so circling back to the beginning - GO ASU SUNDEVILS AND GO UCLA BRUINS!!! AZcoues_addict Report post Posted November 2, 2007 There is a BIG difference between chearing for your team, and bad-mouthing another's. If you want to bad-mouth my team, you better at least bring some facts or numbers to the table for discussion, then we can talk sports like adults. Don't just say they suck, or call them scumdevils, that's so un-sportsman like and childish. I can understand kids doing that sort of thing, but when adults and students do it, its so negative and personally distasteful. Hopefully the parents can teach their kids a little better manners and sportsmanship, they need to set the standard and be the example to follow. In fact, we all should for the sake of the youth of this country. GO SUNDEVILS!!!

firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted November 4, 2007 Well Well Well.............I was actually pulling for the Sun Devils....I was hoping WE THE CATS would ruin all there dreams and there PERFECT season! So much for Duck Soup huh ASU fans.............see ya all in 3 weeks! GO CATS!! My dad was sayin the same thing! Chris, there are some rude SOB's that cheer for U of A. Last year my dad and I were at Belushis 'pregamin' and had several of ASU finest ( by that i mean there most gorous girls. which they are none for) Com eup and stick there ASU hand signal 'thingy' in our faces... well, we took advantage of that situation and startd making friendly talk with them, and the other 10 members of thier party (both male and female) and we actually had a heck of a good time. now, of course there was some smack talking, but it was friendly and not insulting. however my friend, you can not make ua sound like the only town who supports their team/bashes there arch rival. i have spent many a night in tempe sporting a ua shirt and got razzled by quite a few people (note, most of the time all i have to say is "SCOREBOARD"). As you know, I am a biggun also, and not many people say it to me in a demaning tone, but they have said it to my 11 year old brother rather rudely, and those people have caught an ear ful. By the way, what was the score of the ua v ucla game and the orgeon v asu game? I was out scouting with Doug in 34a and missed it
War7664 Report post Posted November 5, 2007 Before all of you Sun Devil fans congratulate yourselves on your high sense of class and civility, please read this article. Both sides of the rivalry have gone too far. It must be hard for Steve Kerr to live in the Phoenix area! By James Kelley Arizona Daily Wildcat There are two parts to the UA-ASU rivalry: the part that makes you laugh and the part that makes you wonder why the state still recognizes Arizona State University as a four-year institution. I could easily fill the Wildcat's biggest issue ever with reasons why to hate ASU, but for your reading pleasure (and to avoid carpal tunnel), I've condensed it down. Sure, it's funny when ASU students wear their nacho cheese-yellow shirts that say "SOLID GOLD," when "The Simpsons" rips ASU's admissions standards or when they brag they beat the UA in every sport besides basketball. By the way, even winning four of the last five football games, when the Wildcats went through a span so bad they had three head coaches, didn't make a dent in Arizona's lead in the all-time UA-ASU football series. As for the rest of the sports, ASU has only finished ahead of the UA in the Director's Cup ranking of athletic programs once, which was so embarrassing that the UA didn't mention its finish in a press release. Fate seems to hate the Devils as much as normal civilization does. Coupled with the normal inferiority complex a "State University" feels toward a "University of" school, the Sun Devils can't seem to catch a break. Just after taking office, their new president, Michael Crow, vowed to reverse their party school image. Right after that it was revealed that student government VP Brian Buck appeared in a porno filmed in his frat house. I wasn't at all surprised to see that the latest white trash being arrested on COPS a few weeks ago was wearing a Sun Devil hat. I had it on mute, but I'd be willing to bet he was slapping his girlfriend/sister. The other part of the rivalry is much darker, and you see how the school's oh-so-easy-to-conceive-nicknames, the Scum Devils and ASSU, came about. After all, ASU is the school that named its football field after Frank Kush, who was fired for punching his punter, and has a basketball team best known for shaving points in the mid-'90s. In the mid-'80s, some of ASU's finest heckled a former UA baseball coach about his wife, Georgia, who was dying of Lou Gehrig's disease. Classy. Yes, this was an isolated incident, possibly started by two drunken fans, but it was just the first noticeable occurrence of this phenomenon. There is a clear pattern, which even an ASU student can recognize. A few years later, ASU fans taunted former UA basketball player Steve Kerr with chants of "PLO," "Where's your dad?" and "Go back to Beirut." Earlier in his Wildcat career, Kerr's father, Malcolm (the president of American University in Beirut) was assassinated by terrorists. OK, maybe you can say, "well, that was ages ago and just a small group; they are long gone and have been politicians or telemarketers for years now." But the savages continue today. At UA-ASU games, racial slurs are common and a neutral family, though mostly for the Sun Devils, near me at a softball game in Phoenix became so disgusted at the ASU fans' antics that they switched allegiances on the spot. The worst I have heard from UA fans is stuff like, "Hey Van Horn, how many wives do you have?" to former Utah basketball player Keith Van Horn, or, "N-I-T ... if you're lucky" to a USC player. But those lines are necessary to build any halfway-decent student section. The latest public incident is the most puzzling though. With the UA up by 26 points in a basketball game last fall, UA head coach Lute Olson pointed to the scoreboard near the student section in Tempe. What prompted this action by Olson? That, of course, would be the trash talk about Olson's wife, Bobbi, who died of cancer in 2001. I personally can't fathom UA students ever chanting something about Pat Tillman. This is one of the many reasons why we must hate ASU but never stoop to its level. Retain your class and dignity, because ASU fans will eventually embarrass themselves. Take a cue from Lute and just point to the scoreboard.
