Hoss50 Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Can a muzzle brake be too big? I have a buddy that has had shoulder surgery and wants to put a big brake on his .308 Win with heavy barrel. Will a one of the large "magnum" muzzle brakes give any more reduction in recoil vs something designed for more standard calibers like 308? I have a 300 Win Mag that Axisworks put a big 5 Port Piercision Muscle brake on, and it works great. Would that same brake be overkill for the 308 vs a smaller brake? lancetkenyon Report post Posted April 26, 2017 IT will work fine but not needed. A good 3 side port design will work just as good if the bore size is close.
rossislider Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Your big 5 port one would be plenty. I have a 3 side port Badger Thruster brake on my 300 RUM and my son has been shooting it since he was 9 and loves it. Just have him talk to Eric and he will steer him in the right direction. 300RUM Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Another thing that might help, in addition to the brake, would be to shoot lighter bullets. They generally produce less recoil than heavier ones.

Tac Report post Posted April 27, 2017 I sure like my big muzzle brake on my armalite .338 lapua it reduces recoil to where grandma loves to shot it. It makes recoil similar to .243 or less.

Hoss50 Report post Posted April 27, 2017 Point the tip on that thing and you could have a dual purpose muzzle brake/bayonet/tree saw.
muledeerarea33? Report post Posted April 27, 2017 Buy a smaller gun, save your ears. 308 doesn't have much recoil but if its to much after his surgery then do a .22 cal.
Kaffer62 Report post Posted April 27, 2017 just get in the habit of wearing ear protection regardless of what I shoot. I put this one on my latest rifle which is a 6.5 Grendel. The rifle doesn't have a whole lot of kick to begin with compared to others but with this break the rifle can be shot with one hand all day long

I know too many guys in the generation ahead of me with terrible hearing from years of shooting without protection. I always hunt with some of the little plastic plugs in my most accessible pocket when hunting.
GreyFox Report post Posted April 27, 2017 For an education in recoil reduction and muzzle brakes, I suggest you contact Ron Barrett at Vais Brakes. http://www.muzzlebrakes.com/ A larger DIAMETER brake will be less effective (over size hole) a HEAVIER brake is more effective (more weight) but who wants to lug an extra 10 pounds on a light weight rifle? A properly tuned brake in 308 will reduce recoil; however the standard is a 30 caliber magnum (maybe a 30'06??) so the further up and down you move from the "standard" the less recoil reduction percentage wise. In other words, say a 50% reduction in a 30'06 180 gr full load will be maybe a 35% reduction in a 308 and 165 gr load.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted April 27, 2017 If he ever shoots prone, stay away from radial style brakes like Vias and KDF. While they work great, they blow dust/sand/rocks right in your face/rifle with the down ports.
