CouesPursuit Report post Posted April 26, 2017 Easy answer, 4" zoom pumpkinseed lizards, chartreuse tail only if I'm feeling crazy. The next best is an all black hellgrammite. Enjoy!

GreyGhost85 Report post Posted May 10, 2017 ^^^^this. Live crawdads also work well. I river fish smallmouth a lot and leave the tacklebox at home. I bring hooks, split shots, a bait bucket and a minnow net and flip over rocks till i have a jug full of bait.
WHT_MTNMAN Report post Posted May 10, 2017 I catch small mouth on about everything you can think of, but I've gotten to be a little bit of a fishing snob. Kind of like some of those fly fisherman. I love to catch small mouth on top water with a floating deep diving Rapala. I don't catch as many, but usually catch on average a little bit bigger, no matter the time of year.
Alpinebullwinkle Report post Posted May 20, 2017 Terranzulza fly my wife's grandfather tied is the best fly that ever produced small mouth for me on the Black. Before I became a fly fisherman the Mepps spinner worked best for me. My father-in-law always kicked my but though with hellgrammites or crawfish he would snag on the river.
