I've killed a lot of birds using a 12 gauge with a modified choke and 4 or 5 shot. I've also killed them using duck shot. If your close enough bird shot will even do the trick. I switch to a full or turkey choke when the birds are holding up so I can take longer shots.

Muzzleloaders are legal in ND so I use this one!! My dad killed his at 298 yards with it last weekend and I killed this one at 168 on Saturday! I try to call them in but if they hold up I airmail one to em. Last years was at 6 yards with a head shot. As far as shotguns go, the smaller the shot then better. It's an odds game. Heavyshot 7's will go clear through a turkeys head at 70 yards so keep your shot small and your numbers up!

I have a Rem 11-87 SPT-Turkey (thumbhole stock) and use a Cabela's Hevi Shot extra full turkey choke for it. I have two boxes left of the Remington Wingmaster and Hevi-shot (before they sold the Hevi-Shot name) 3.5" #4s. Last bird I shot at 38 yards dropped straight in its tracks and was all kinds of jelly-head.

I am new to hunting birds (of any kind) with a shotgun. Kill't plenty grouse with sticks and stones growing up. I used shotguns in a previous occupation. Otherwise I am entirely green to all this and ,hence, might be a sucker to .marketing.

With that said, I picked up a Browning BPS 12 gauge and a Winchester Long Beard XR choke. The load I will use is the Winchester Long Beard XR 3" 1200 fps, 1 3/4oz #5 shot.

That should work just fine.

A 35 year old Mossberg 500 with a Primos Tight Wad choke and Winchester Long Beard 12ga #4. It was originally a 28" modified barrel.

Sometime in the early 80 I bought a 26" vent rib barrel with screw in chokes and sent it out and had it backbored and the forcingcone lengthened. Added a mercury supressor in the tube and a mechanical recoil device in the stock and adjustable sights. Ain't purty, in fact I did a hand painted Realtree paint job with model airplane paint with a little brush before companies offered camo stocks.

Works for me.

Remington youth 870 20 gauge with Hevi-shot extended choke. Currently shooting Hevi-shot mag blends with really good results. My daughter is shooting similar except a Primos Jelly head choke.
