Ruger American .22

I bought it new. Nice little setup...bolt action so i can teach my kids better mechanics of shooting vs semi auto.

 

So i put a pursuit rimfire scope on it....i didn't want to drop big coin on a .22.

 

I took it out to sight it in and it was all over the place at 50 yds. I would have thought i could shoot silver dollars repeatedly at that range. I was using remington .22 thunderbolt ammo...probably had 450 rounds through it without cleaning up to that point.

 

I cleaned it when i got home and hopefully that tightens things up a bit. Has anyone had bad luck with that ammo? I have a box of the Federal Automatch stuff...hopefully i get better results.

also, what kind of grouping should i expect at 50 and 100?

I'd fault the scope WAY before the rifle, however if it's really that bad & not the scope Ruger has an awesome guarantee they will make it right...Most all the Ruger rim fires I've had would shoot dime size groups @ 50 without to much trouble and around an inch @ 100, could also try some different ammo but I shoot the Remington T' bolts in some higher end 22's an it's ok.

that's the kind of feedback i'm seeking thanks. maybe it was a dirty barrel. will give it another try and troubleshoot from there...

I'm going to say a dirty .22 barrel won't affect it that much, I'd check the scope mounts or scope. Reason I say that is because I have a Mossberg semi auto I bought years ago just to see how many rounds til it jambs. Thousand upon thousands later without cleaning, the $60 gun still shoots under an inch at 50 yards. And its a cheapie.

I had an American in 22 mag, 100 yd groups of 1.5" with a few different types of ammo.

My thoughts exactly. I recently mounted a scope on my son's RAR and have yet to get it sighted in, but that rifle shoots lights out with open sights...the few times my son lets me shoot it! I've shot Federal, Winchester, and Remington through it and it groups them all nicely.

I have done quite a bit of testing with different kinds of 22 ammo in several different rifles and you will be surprised at the difference a simple ammo change can make. You will also be surprised to find one particular rifle to hate a certain kind of ammo and another love it. Take CCI quiet for example. My 10/22 with a Green Mountain match barrel shoots 2" groups at 50 yards with that stuff. My wife's 10/22 with a Green Mountain match barrel will shoot them under an inch. Hard to explain that one. Hers will shoot bug hole groups with Norma Match and mine prefers the Wolf Match. Both rifles shoot extremely well in general but they definitely have their favorites.
