Finally made it happen

Recommended Posts

This was my first coues buck and my first coues hunt and my first left over tag. He's no monster but I'm smiling. The second picture is of a friend that has never had the opportunity to hunt before, man was he stoked. I am pretty sure he is hooked now. We harvested our bucks at 7:15am on opening day and man was it one hot mother packing these guys out.

Nice first coues buck for sure! Congratulations to you both.

What's the story? You both got deer at the same time in the same place?

That a great first coues buck. Congrats to you and your friend. Looks like you guys had a great opening morning.

We got down to where we wanted to camp late Thursday night and saw a bunch of camps along the road that takes us to the spot we were going to hunt. I was a little upset because I have been scouting in this area for the last five weekends and never saw another tire track on the road besides mine, but I guess that's hunting. I panicked a little because this was the first season I have ever been in 35A and had high hopes for my first coues tag. I figured I would stick to my original plan since I had done my home work and had confidence in my plans.

Before I knew it the alarm went off at 2:45 and it was time to hit the trail. I guess we had hiked a lot faster than I had planed for, because we were in our glassing spot at 5:15. I poured a cup of coffee and told my buddy (Detjen) to just sit back and wait for the sun to rise. The sun came up at about 6:15 and right away I had two little forkys in my binos and several does. I started to get excited and decided to take a look at another hill. I saw a little flicker of an ear and then I could make out an antler. I told Detjen that I wanted to take a closer look at the buck and that I could see another deer were him but could not tell if it was a small buck or a doe. He said well lets get a move on it and we started the stalk. We booked it across three small canyons and got set up on top of a ridge that would give me a shot, 45 minutes later. I found the buck and thought well he's no monster but I think he will be a fine first coues buck. I found the other deer and told my buddy that he was a 1X2, he said I would love to take a shot. I range finded both the bucks; mine was 402 yards and Detjen’s was 396 yards. I got set up and let one fly. The buck jumped out of his bed and I could see that he was hit well. The littler buck stood up and looked around in confusion not knowing where the shot came from. Then Detjen touches off and his buck drops too. We sat there for a moment in amazement and watched our bucks to make sure they were not going anywhere. Then we made our decent down the canyon and up the other side to take care of business and pack them out as fast as we could since it was so stinking hot. It was a great trip and I am so glad that I could share Detjen’s first hunt and first kill with him. Thanks for reading the story and good luck to all of those that have hunts to come and congrats to all of those that have already harvested their bucks.

You're a stud for puttin the work in you did and getting Det in on his first big game hunt. I don't think I have ever seen him so excited as he was when he told me how it all went down. Congrats man. AK

Doubles like that are not too common. Only been part of one 1 time. It was pretty neat except for the darn heat! 2 trips up and down the trail and 4 hours later it was done! I'd do it again in a heartbeat!

Thanks for telling the tale!

Thanks.

Yes, we did share my gun. I have not had a riffle tag of any kind in so long that each hunting season I spend a lot of time and money on it and my hand loads. I have finally got it to what I would call a custom rifle and I know it very well. I was leting my budy barrow another rifle but when the time came for him to shoot I told him to use mine since I know how it shoots at 400 yards and how the wind effects it.
