gr8fuldoug Report post Posted March 25, 2017 Camera Land brings you Big News from Leupold Leupold's VX-5HD Line BEAVERTON, Ore. — Leupold & Stevens, Inc. introduces its new line of VX®-5HD optics, designed for the self-sufficient hunter looking to push themselves and their gear toward bigger challenges and greater hunts. The VX-5HD features a 5x erector assembly, fitting perfectly into Leupold's line up between the VX-3i and the VX-6HD. With 1-5x, 2-10x and 3-15x models in the initial launch, there is a VX-5HD out there to meet any task thrown at it. "Every year, more hunters are going beyond their comfort zone to take on ever bigger adventures," said Tim Lesser, vice president of product development for Leupold & Stevens, Inc. "The VX-5HD is designed and built to help these hunters expand their hunts from bigger game to more challenging areas. If you can dream it, the VX-5HD can hunt it." With Twilight Max® Light Management System and high-definition performance, the VX-5HD delivers a crisp, clear image from first light to the last inkling of twilight, without compromising its ability to reduce glare in the harshest midday sun. The VX-5HD will be ready to go, whenever you are. New CDS-ZL2 adjustments offer a secure locking dial, calibrated to your exact rifle and load using Leupold's Custom Dial System® technology. The CDS-ZL2 allows for two complete revolutions of the dial, precisely set to your ballistics. The VX-5HD is available in 1-5x24mm, 2-10x42mm and 3-15x56mm, all featuring a 30mm maintube. A variety of reticles are available, including the Duplex®, FireDot® 4, Wind-Plex®, Boone and Crockett® Big Game and Impact-29 MOA. duckhunter175 Report post Posted March 28, 2017 How bout a 4-20x!!
lancetkenyon Report post Posted March 28, 2017 Leupold is really missing the boat by not adding a 4-20 & 5-25 if they are priced comparably ($1.5-2.5K). The 3.5-27 Mark 8 is a good scope, but they priced themselves with far superior optics, and the Mark 8 falls short of those lofty aspirations. Why buy a $4500 Leupold when you can get almost any S&B PMII, a Hensoldt, or 5-25 Tangent Theta for the same, or usually much LESS, cash? The 3.5-27 Mark 8 barely holds its own against a $2500 Vortex (Razor Gen II or AMG). And the new Minox ZP-5 series, Kahles K624i, and a few other $2500-3000 scopes crush it. I hope this is a step in the right direction and Leupold starts upping their game and listening to the public. Reticle choices really need a revision too.
duckhunter175 Report post Posted April 13, 2017 I think Leupold had two big, "Swing and Miss" this season. 1. VX3i LRP-- For the price it really doesn't compete well within it's weight class. Fewer features, big goofy elevation turret, 5 mil per turn, same old 3x mag ranges... I think the XTRII, maybe even Veracity and definitely the PST Gen II are going to doom this before it even gets started. It's nice they finally offered an FFP not in the Mk series :/ 2. VX5-- Lack of higher magnification ranges, limited reticle choices for long range hunting/shooting (unless you get custom shop involved). They did at least give you 2 revolutions on the dials. And I believe the Mk4 line is now discontinued so why not offer an FFP model of the VX5HD or VX6HD?
yotebuster Report post Posted April 13, 2017 The VX6 3-18 is the finest "hunting" scope made. I've got 4 of them and love them but I wish they made a 4-24. The new zero lock turret is the best turret design out there for hunting situations. No non sense. The thing that sets leupold above all others for me is the scope caps. Yes you read that right, the scope caps. I won't own a scope that doesn't have flip up scope caps and a few years back (maybe a decade) butler creek decided to make theirs all self destructing and they don't last a single hunt. I've tried bikini covers and neoprene but I want something that deploys quick and doesn't get lost. The aluminum ones for leupold are the ultimate. Wish someone made good aftermarket ones for my huskies and nightforcd scopes.

I have the vx6 2-12 fire dot duplex on my .338wm and so far so good! I can't really consider the older VX6 because you only get 13 MOA out of the CDS dial which doesn't get past 750 yards for me. The new ones give two revolutions which is nice but they are still behind the times.
yotebuster Report post Posted April 13, 2017 I agree when it comes to long range. I was more referring to a good all around hunting scope. I've got one on my muzzleloader and it'll get me to 475 and one on my 17wsm and it gets me to 450 I think. My 7mm STW will go to 850 which is as far as I need it to go. I like the new ones with the two revolutions!

My two don't have a zero stop and I believe I run out at 43 moa. My 270 WSM's is dialed in to 1200 yds with an old vx-6. I do have a new vx-3i that runs out at 13.5 moa.

DSE-- I stand corrected--- I was thinking of the 3i... I spent last weekend looking at LOTS of glass trying to make a decision on a scope for my 7RUM. The new VX6HD I think does only get two REVs because of that pop out indicator.
GreyGhost85 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 My VX3i certainly has more than one revolution? It just doesn't have zero stop and can be confusing once you get past one full revolution
lancetkenyon Report post Posted April 14, 2017 If all you are looking for is good scope caps, try Aadmount or Tenebraex. All I use on my scopes. Then get a good scope to put them on.
ThomC Report post Posted April 14, 2017 O si si, I am intrigued about a scope that can see further than I can hit anything. It can doble as a spot scope to check out the floozies in tempe.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted April 14, 2017 If all you are looking for is good scope caps, try Aadmount or Tenebraex. All I use on my scopes. Then get a good scope to put them on. Do they work with very limited space or they like to Butler Creeks go on the outside of the lenses? The scope on my 28 is mounted very low.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted April 14, 2017 Depends on application. Most take a ring that screws into the scope bell/sunshade and then the cap and ring snap onto the adapter ring.
