Heat Report post Posted March 13, 2017 Went on a half day trip with a bunch of my cousins and friends for my cousin Joe's bachelor party this past Saturday. Water was cold and the fishing was slow. Slow pick of bottom critters was all that was had. I boated 6 fish I think. First was an ocean whitefish that was an inch short. Then a treefish which was a keeper. A mini ackeral was next followed by a tiny rockfish that was too small for bait. On the last stop I switch to the other side to deal with the current and got two more keepers on the next two drops! One was an olive rockfish and the other was a gopher bass. I had never caught any of these fish before other than mackeral so that was kinda cool. A few short ling cod were caught and returned along with a few decent size vermillion rockfish. One sand bass, and one good size sculpin were caught too. Other than that is was pretty slow. Probably outfished everyone else two to one so that was an ego boost, LOL! More than that it was a great time fishing with my cousins! Captain Fred Huber was running the boat and his deckhand David was helping us out. They did a heck of a job as usual. Always have fun fishing with Fred and his partner Steve on the boats from Point Loma Sportfishing!

PRDATR Report post Posted March 14, 2017 Size limit on whitefish.... never heard of such a thing. Congrats on getting out and the fish tacos. Ed F Ocean WhitefishThe recreational fishery for ocean whitefish (Caulolatilus princeps) is open year-round to divers and shore-based anglers. The fishery is open to boat-based anglers from March 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017. Ocean whitefish may only be taken or possessed in waters less than 360 feet (60 fathoms) deep. The daily bag and possession limit is 10 fish, with no minimum size limit. The ocean whitefish fishery is managed by the state of California. Although not a federally managed groundfish species, ocean whitefish are often encountered by fishermen targeting federally managed groundfish. Thus, the ocean whitefish fishery is managed in concert with the federally managed groundfish group, which includes over 90 species that live on or near the bottom of the ocean (with a few exceptions). View a summary of groundfish regulations.
