Caliber preference

Personally i agree with the .270 win. 130 grn accutips is what i shoot. both will do it just fine but the arguement with the lesser wind drift on the 300 being a heavier bullet is right on, as alot of coues country can get a might bit windy. the 300 is flat and does have alot of knock down. but if you can shoot and comp for windage the 243 is great to.

This topic has been beat to death, but it is always a good one.

I have a good buddy whos wife smoked a toad of a buck with a 22-250 with a Vmax bullet... Granted, we both agree she got lucky as the Vmax is a varmint bullt. It did manage to break the big ole bucks neck.

I have killed coues with a 30-06, and 270wsm. I have used 125 ballistic tips out of the 30-06 ( will NEVER shoot a BT for big game agian) as well as a high energy load of Trophy Bonded Bear Claw. I actually found the TBBC on the off side of the deer ( 1/4ing away shot). perfect.

I now shoot a 270wsm with a 140 accubond movin at about 3150 FPS. I whacked one deer with the bullet movin 3250, and one at 3150.. both dead deer.

When I have guys ask me what to shoot... first off accuracy superceeds any other component. If it were me, I would start at .243 at a bare minimum. of course, a 243 will kill any deer that walks with a perfect shot, but perfect shots are not always offered come hunting season ( no i dont condone taking bad shots), however, if there is a buck out there at the edge of your comfort zone, say 350-400 yards, i want as much power as i can handle to drive that bullet through what ever it needs to be driven through to get to the vitals. 25-06, 257 wby, (lark)270) 280, 7mm.... 30-06... anything above that will work and know the heck out of em but is a lil much. Of course, I carry my 270wsm and LOVE IT!! my dad shoots a 7RUM and that thing is awesome as well!!!

Coues have and will be taken with .223 and 22-250, how ever i would never carry one of these rifles unless I had no choice.

You should use which ever rifle you are most comfortable with. Either of those 2 calibers are great for deer. I personally choose to use my Rem. Mod. 700 In 300 ultra mag. Of all the rifles in my gun locker I shoot this one the best! I use 180gr Swift Sciroccos going about 3400fps.

what was that guys name? outofthecloset or outhouse, whatever. superhero? nope, just a hunter. some o' you guys act like whitetail are some mystical thing that takes a cannon at 600 yards. if i see a deer too far away, i get closer. and i will take a long shot at a running animal if that's all i get too. don't matter to me. i just hunt. don't have to pack some 15 pound thing with laser sights and a tripod either. i have a bipod. seldom use it. i didi use it on a goat in colorado last year. had it on my rifle when i shot a big muley there too. but didnt' use it. i was only shooting about 50 yards. because i can sneak. no range finder. no calibrated scope. if you have to have all them crutches, that's fine. but i don't need em adn don't tell me that i do. and i could kill anything in north america with a .243 if i had too. and not even worry about it. because i can shoot and i can hunt. to say a .243 ain't enough is absurd. to say any reasonable center fire ain't enough is even more absurder and to say you have to have a .300 mag to hunt whitetail is plum goofy. i don't care about crosswinds, big canyons, whatever. because i can shoot. sorry if you can't, but maybe with a little more practice and a lot more experience, you can get proficient. in the mean time, i guess you'll hafat use the trainer wheels. Lark.

Ya know, Lark.... there is some wisdom in what your saying. A .243 is enough gun for most hunting situations..... but only a fool would say it is enough all the time. And knowing ones limitaions is very important. If a guy was to hunt only in the Southern half of the Lower 48 his whole life then a .243 or a .270 would get it done most of the time. I even shot my Dall sheep with a .243 I borrowed from my Canadian guide, after my bow sites got mashed. Shot him at less than a 100 yds...... Shot my desert sheep with my bow at 45 yds opening morning, with my bow. I, too, can get close in open country..... I have hunted elk with open sites on a lever action 30-30 Win. and had great success. heck, we have even hunted elk with a 22-250...  ... crazy, maybe, but true. There is a time and place for all kinds of hunting weapons. I happen to prefir my 300 Wby. Mag to any gun I own..... it has a calibrated scope (now) and I shoot it well to 500-600 yds..... and since I rarely hunt in the wide-open desert.... there are times that I cannot get closer than 400-600 yds to an elk or deer. When I hunt that kind of country..... I am prepared and practiced. When I hunt that easy county down South where there are deer under every dang tree then I may not need some of my up-graded equipment. You see I own a GPS, a Rangefinder, and many other neat toys that I don't need if I can close the distance to less than 300 yds..... but if I need them I am prepared. They are not training wheels...... they are tools that allow me to hunt well in country that other hunters may not be able too. And my Cannon..... my ol' 300 Wby Mag..... well she can kill a Grizzly about as well as a coyote...... a good shot from that gun will kill a deer as fast as any gun will.... and not any faster than a .243 on a clalm day at less than 300 yds..... which might happen 90% of the time, for all I know..... but that other 10% of the time..... I'll still be ready to make a clean, ethical kill. ;)

Moral....... Don't Throw Stones In A Glass House...... ;)
