azcoyote Report post Posted February 20, 2017 So a fella has tags for two overlapping hunts in the same unit, Turkey and Bear in the spring. He is lucky enough to get a turkey in the morning which he promptly field dresses leaving a gut pile. He continues to hunt his spot, now focusing on predator calls to pull in a bear. Is he hunting over bait? Would be a interesting problem to have...
AZ_SAWBUCK Report post Posted February 20, 2017 I would say no he is not hunting over "bait". He didn't purposely put the gut pile in that specific location trying to bait a bear.
AZ_SAWBUCK Report post Posted February 20, 2017 On second thought "No person shall knowingly use any substance as bait at any time to attract or take a bear" (R12-4-303)........could be a little shaky ground.
mattys281 Report post Posted February 20, 2017 Seems like running in a real gray area left to the individual G&F officers interpretation. I wouldn't do it. Those guts will be eaten up by a crow or a fox before a bear ambles by anyway.
Hatchet Jack Report post Posted February 20, 2017 I think the words knowingly and any substance would get ya.
Couzer Report post Posted February 20, 2017 Yea not a good idea. I heard a guy had to put down a horse on his ranch. He took the horse out to a disclosed area to anyone near by and put it down. A week later he notice a bear crossing the dirt road near by multiple times. He figured the bear was feeding on the dead horse so he already had a otc bear tag. He went in the next day and shot the bear, well long story short his license was suspended for 5 years with a hefty fine for hunting over bait.

rossislider Report post Posted February 21, 2017 Wouldn't work on turkey, but if a bear were traveling back and fourth to a kill site, you identified the route, and killed it on route, you would not be hunting over bait.
biglakejake Report post Posted February 21, 2017 the govt predator guys who come to navajo cty buy an old horse and walk it out to shoot it in the head under the blind. 1 feller in 2004 killed 1500 dogs, coyotes and whatnot in 45 days. lee
azcoyote Report post Posted February 21, 2017 Interesting thoughts! Nobody field dresses turkeys. Insert animal of appropriate species here....
azcoyote Report post Posted February 21, 2017 So to the next logical thought. You tuck your turkey in your blind and start calling away for your bear or whatever.... Same issue?
Hoss50 Report post Posted February 21, 2017 If you cut your finger while hunting bear, are you now bait? You have a sandwich in your pocket, is that bait?
