Snapshot Report post Posted January 28, 2017 That certainly was a gloomy day. I remember the whole country was excited about the teacher who was picked for the shuttle. I imagine it was pretty heart wrenching for the family & friends of the shuttle crew to watch the launch video.

Edge Report post Posted January 29, 2017 The Challenger trajedy was exactly 19 years and a day following the Apollo 1 fire which claimed 3 astronauts. Both accidents could have easily been avoided had NASA higher ups listened to their engineers. Some of you may not have known that Luke AFB was an alternative landing strip for the shuttle program. I watched the lift off and explosion live while sending NASA landing data. It was a heart breaking day. After 9 previous Challenger missions, I think Americans became a little complacent about the dangers of space flight.

Similar experience...I think I was in 6th or 7th grade and didn't see the launch...asked a younger student in the hall how it was and he said "it blew up"...I didn't believe him.
