Question about going from ADL to BDL

Recommended Posts

I have a 700 ADL in 7 Mag I bought in the early 90's when Remington first offered a plastic stocked stainless rifle. Last week I hunted with a couple of guys who also had 700's and had Bell and Carlson stocks on them which weighed quite a bit less than my rifle and had a better balance.

So on my quest to change the stock it dawned on me that I should also go from ADL to BDL. Where should I begin my search for the bottom metal?

I did the conversion and felt it was a not worth the money for me but Remington arms Web Store has had about the best price on the floorplate and mag box that you will need

If I were to switch over anymore of my ADL's, I would do so to a DM style setup. PT&G has some of the best prices you'll find, unless you want a specific brand.

Won't switching from adl to bdl add weight?

Did these guys have strictly factory rifles in BDL. Or were they in fancy McMillan, manners etc stocks? What about their barrels and optics, how did they compare?

I like being able to drop the floor plate to clear my magazine without running the bolt.

If you want a light stock, more so than your plastic stock, I don't think you are going to find one. Those Tupperware stocks are pretty light, but have a lot of flex to them. You can definitely stiffen up the stock with an aftermarket composite stock however. The B&C with the aluminum bedding block weigh about 2.5-2.7# each. Same with HS Precision stocks.

If you want lightweight and stiff, you need to go with something like a Manners EH, McMillan Edge fill, or a B&C Alaskan Wilderness, B&C Medalist Ultralight, Stocky's/AG Composite CF, HS Precision Pro 2000 Ultralight, etc. Those are between 24-30 oz. Probably still just a bit heavier than your plastic though.

Stockystocks.com sells a few different styles of bottom metal and also detachable mag systems. They even offer a bit of a discount on those when you buy a stock and a bottom kit together. One stop shop.

One was a 300 Win Mag BDL, stainless so pretty comparable to what I have and it was noticeably lighter and both rifles had B&C stocks.

Look into a browns precision 1 pound Kevlar stock pretty stiff and obviously a lot lighter and a high quality stock.

They are nice but I can't justify the cost.

I had an ADL and was given a CDL stock by a buddy. I ended up putting this on mine and am happy with it. It was pretty easy to install and the quality is good. Way better then having to run the bolt every time you empty your magazine, especially with the old style trigger which requires the safety off.

I like it, so the kit comes with a 4 round mag?
