Wage Increase Trickle Down

Recommended Posts

So during that time you were a successful landscaper what did you pay your employees? Hopefully, it was enough to support them and there 3 illegitimate kids plus a mortgage payment and the new mini van in the driveway.

Bob, you are not the only one that has had a rough time. Many of us have. I know of a guy who went through a similar situation as I did in the economic crash 8 years ago. He blew his brains out, and left a wife and children to clean up the mess.

If you like Rush or not, he is insighful and informative. He must be doing well considering he owns a $50 million dollar Gulfstream.

Onward thru the fog!

Insightful for anyone that listens. The lefties hate him, so he is o.k in my book.

There are unscrupulous businesses ouy there that will raise prices at a rate that far exceeds the minimum wage increase. A good short order cook makes more than minimum wage, and increasing a plate of food by 25% is way out of line.

I do own a landscape construction company and I can assure you there aren't any laborers that would even lift a shovel for minimum wage.

I have absolutely NO problem with any business owner raising their prices as much as they feel like. Their business, not mine. Free market, supply/demand, etc... If they claim it is due to min wage increase, well I suppose that is their business too (I can't necessarily claim to understand their business model, costs, etc...). It's not like I am forced to go to their business, and if the prices get too high I will stop.

Regarding the minimum wage debate in general, I suppose that I'm against it for many of the same reasons folks have sited on this thread. (Though I do remember as a kid making $3.10 per hour at the local grocery store in Kearny, I was SUPER happy when the minimum was raised to $3.35! :D ) Times have definitely changed! ;)

So you don't mind if gasoline jumps up to $4.00 a gallon.?

There is a huge difference between, free market, and excessive greed.

They can all price themselves out of business for all I care!

When I was 10 my dad and his business partner would pay me .25 cents an hour, but I had to be working, not hunting birds with my BB gun.......When I got older and asked for a raise my dads partner, who was the one writing the checks told me he would double my wages......2 X 0 = 0.................that was always my answer when I asked for a raise working for my dad......no matter what the pay......and working on a pig farm there were jobs you couldn't hire people to do........

$4 gas? Depends on the reason for the increase, I suppose. It was $4 a while back (due to free market forces) and I paid it like most everyone else. Did I "mind' it? Well, it didn't overjoy me..... Paid it though since it was the price I had to pay.

Regarding free market vs. excessive greed. I understand they are two different things..... Didn't mean to insinuate otherwise. Whether excessive greed is driving the market up or not is a fact that all consumers and business's must deal with. Just the way it is.

I agree with business pricing themselves out of business, I of course agree with you on that. The market will dictate that. If they raise prices so high that they go out of business, so be it. Makes no difference to me.

DB, I think the government setting the minimum wage really has no impact on whether it is a Free Market or not. They are not setting the price of goods/services. Just adding a factor that can drive prices. Has been that way for decades.
