Wage Increase Trickle Down

Recommended Posts

I'm glad to see this topic as I've seen immediate impacts in my community that I'd like to share. We employ 150+ minimum wage workers at my facility and it's been my pleasure to identify where we are "losing" with this increase for them:

* My work no longer supplies free coffee (avg 210 cups / day consumed)

* We negotiated a deal with the vending machine company for free coffee. As soon as minimum wage increased they removed the free coffee. It is now sold in the vending machine. $1.25 / cup.

* My company has stopped providing plastic silverware and plates in the break room. I hate eating my yogurt with my finger!

* We cut the 2nd shift from 52 to 37 employees. 15 people lost their job.

* The place where my son gets his haircut raised their price from $12.50 to $15.00 per haircut. Not sure why, but they didn't wash his hair before cutting it. Might be something new or just an oversight.

* The ice cream shop no longer has the "buy 10 - get 1 free card" and they are not continuing any current cardholders. I had 7 stamps dang it!

* My barber shop fired the kid that cleaned up the floor while the guys cut hair.

* My mechanic shop got rid of the 2 girls that delivered vehicles to / from customers. Owner said the forced increase was the last straw.

Someone asked if the increase has trickled up. In my facility, those who make $11 / hr are now very upset the gap has been narrowed as they have more difficult jobs. Managers like me will receive a 15% decrease in bonus this year.

The most puzzling part about this increase is the amount of workers that have quit. We have lost over a dozen associates who have been with us for 7 years who have quit because they would "make too much money and not qualify any longer for gov't assistance programs". We have quite a few that cannot work overtime due to the same rationale.

I really would like someone to explain the rationale behind the wage increase.........does not make a lick of sense....I bet Lark could explain it!!!

I have the same issue, many of my employees are retirees, who will have to pay taxes on their retirement if they earn too much. So, they can only work less, yet many don't want to sit at home and do nothing. I have several people who are on Access for medical due to expensive prescriptions who will lose it if they make too much. "Obamacare"was too expensive for them. Oh, but wait, its also called the " Affordable care Act". How does that work?

As a small business owner, I have a hard time understanding why people who have never invested anything such as like their life's savings or sweat equity or borrowed against everything they owned, can decide what I should have to pay someone to come to work for me. If a person does not like the wages I offer, they can keep looking.

This whole thing was pushed by unions from out of state, and the petitioners and many of the signatures that put it on the ballot were not valid or legitimate. Yet, some liberal judge ruled that the challenge had to be filed in five days total , not five business days, because the Arizona Resturaunt Association included a weekend in their time frame to challenge and refused the challenge. Per the words of the State Constitution. However, when the State Constitution also states that there can only be one issue on a ballot, or that it cannot cost the state financially unless it provides for a source of revenue for the increase in the States spending, same liberal judges refused to delay or hear it.

There is a very slight possibility the constitutionality will be reviewed in February, but can you imagine the shitstorm if the minimum wage is overturned AFTER people have been paid $10.00 an hour for minimum wage? I don't think any of our liberal judges will have the stones to do it.

Arizona has become Little California. Next thing you know, Jerry Brown will be governing us from afar.

I was so shocked that it passed, and have instantly suffered as a business owner. Many of my subcontractors have had to increase prices, eventually forcing me to do the same last week. It has been painful. Just think about it, the WORST, do-10%-of-the-work-of-a-good-worker, least motivated employees in the state are being paid $10/hour! Giving them an instant 24% raise? 50% over three years? Who comes up with this? Of course that effects tons of other hourly guys up the chain. And it keeps going for YEARS.

Would it be possible to create a proposition to counter it?

Yes. Like no tags has stated, this was not done by AZ politicians it was done by lawyers paid for by unions to get put on the ballot. It would have to go through the proper channels to get put on the next one. There will be a lot of data and statistics to go through that should demonstrate how bad this is for AZ hopefully next time around it will getput on. And yes there would be a shi.storm but it would be worth it. The real bad thing would be all the lawsuits that it would generate when employers make bs reasons to can employees just to hire new ones cheaper.

If the lower class wants to make more money perhaps they should work hard, learn a skill and get a better job. Quit smoking the dope, put the beer bottle down and apply themselves. There are plenty of good paying jobs around that don't require a college education, just a good work ethic, and a clean piss test. Both of which, unfortunately, is hard to come by these days. Not all business owners are millionaires either, A lot of them struggle to keep the lights on just like the rest of us. Small business owners are probably the hardest working people on the planet, they don't have sick days or weekends its full time all the time and that's what it takes to fulfill the American Dream. Every big business out there started out as a small business and through hard work and smart business practices were able to be successful and grow and make money. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. No, we can't all be rich but we can all work hard for an honest wage and most of the time that requires starting at the bottom making minimum wage and working our way up to that. The problem today is everyone feels entitled to a wage that provides a comfortable living without having to work for it.

BOB.....can you take the talent you have and give me some numbers to help me work through that logic???

Pay more for menial, low skill, low education jobs and make everything better?

That wage increase just s@#t on your higher education, high skilled, had to work to get paying job. Decreases any incentive to motivate any already unmotivated person to improve themselves .

I would like to hear more about your theory on how this helps anybody, not really interested in itching you out just trying to understand!!!

I am not a traditional thinker as far as education is concerned, I came from a farming/ranching home and I have earned most of my money working with my hands.

I am a college is not for everyone person and I hate the bureaucracy that has taken over educating out kids.

Teachers have become babysitters for the nations problems and they have very little to say about what a kid really needs.

If Senator Lieberman doesn't like that DeVos is not from the "educational" pool of people, then I am for the selection.

Education is as corrupt as the VA or any other Federal agency that has been allowed to put mandates on programs and then provide no funding to take care of those mandates.

Never heard of the woman but if she is savy in business and can incorporate that with what a 5th grade teacher really needs in the classroom, I am all for the appointment!!!
