lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 17, 2017 If you had a fairly lightweight (7lb. bare rifle) medium/long range (800-1200) hunting rifle, and you had planned on putting a fairly lightweight high quality scope on it (29oz.), would you add an additional 9oz. (38oz.)to get absolutely top tier gold standard glass on it? Not for everyone, but everything I prefer in a scope. MIL, FFP, illuminated reticle with .2 MIL subtensions, tried and true tracking, used by military/LEOs around the globe, tough as nails, top 2 for glass quality. I can get this optic for the same price as a new lesser quality (but still high quality) scope. The scope that just came off and was sold was 35oz., and the scope on it currently (and temporarily) is 33oz. Not looking for suggestions on lightweight mid grade glass (like a Vortex PST or Leupold VX-6). Trust me, I have plenty of time behind all levels of optics, and cheap does not interest me in the least any longer. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Couzer Report post Posted January 17, 2017 I guess my question would be what are the specs on the scope? Tube size, objective? Or are they the same? But 9 ounces is a difference if your trying to build a light weight rifle. My wife told me just loose some weight and problem solved. Is the 9 ounces going to truly going to effect the clarity of the scope? If yes then 9 ounces is worth the weight. What scope are you inbetween about??? mattys281 Report post Posted January 17, 2017 A 6mm larger objective does not = anything close to 9 oz, nor does a slightly larger piece of tubing for the body, which tells me there is a significant difference in materials and construction between the two. Without taking them apart and measuring everything, i would guess that if the vortex one is that much lighter they are obviously using much lesser/lighter grade internal components. Probably a bunch of aluminum or even plastic parts where the other is likely using steel. If price is no concern, buy the best quality. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Zeke-BE Report post Posted January 17, 2017 Knowing your personality you won't be happy unless you have top tier products (thats not an insult by the way). Your a shooter more than a hiker too. You shoot thousands of rounds a year, and Ill tell you what will happen on your next hunt with this rifle if you choose the lesser. First off you going to do a cool write up on this scope and rifle and show us your loads but wish you had the better scope! Even though its a good scope it just doesn't feel like Lance! Then your going to take it out shooting to practice long range and probably get a 3" grouping out to 750 yards and do another cool write up about that and probably mention the scope is good but I could of had better. Then you will take it out hunting and hike with it for your Daughters 6 day hunt in the BaB (again) and not care if your gun will weigh a half pound more and think every once in a while; why didn't I get the top scope for only $100 more? I think most of us on here will believe this is how Lance Thinks! Am I wrong??? Or is 9oz more important to you because in the past its not! lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 17, 2017 I definitely went with the Schmidt & Bender PMII 5-25x56 DT w. H2CMR. Picked it up this morning. Amazing scope, I have been wanting one for years. I almost pulled the trigger on a March about 20 times in the past 2 months. But not knowing anyone that had one and not being able to look through one, made me hesitant to drop $3k on one. Then was wondering if a Vortex AMG might fit the bill for $500 less. When this deal popped up yesterday, I was all over it. No doubt in my mind, I am so glad I waited. Got it for the same price as the Vortex Razor AMG with tax, and cheaper than the March by a few hundred. I had already made my decision when I posted this thread, just wondering what everyone else would do. I ordered rings and level today. Hopefully be here by Friday so I can mount it up and go shoot it this weekend. I am debating putting it on my .260 however, and taking the S&B 3-20x50 that is on it now, and putting that on my 7mm. That scope is only 31.5oz. Save me 7oz again, and still keep top tier glass on both rifles. I shoot the .260 way more all year than the 7RM too. 1st world problems.....
