Rifle case setup for air travel

Recommended Posts

I have a Pelican / Storm case Im setting up for airline travel and wanted to get feedback on how everyone lays out their setup and what works best. I assume international travel is more restrictive and rather set it up that way to make it easier instead of trying to cut new foam.

Items I have - rifle, G7 BR2 rangefinder, Kestrel wind meter, 2 detachable AICS mags, ammo (60 reloads in factory boxes 3), bipod and bolt (do you leave bolt in rifle or store separetely).

Thanks

Andrew

You'll probably get varying answers on this one. I'm pretty sure, though, that ammo must be kept separate from the firearm. The airline you're flying with should have that specific issue on their website. I've never traveled with them combined because I mostly fly American and, the last time I traveled with a firearm, that was the rule. I've never stored the bolt stored separately, though. With bolt guns, I remember taking the bolt out, though, and leaving it next to the rifle. With everything except bolt guns, I leave the actions open so there is no question. Magazines have always been left out, but next to the rifle or pistol. I'd consider keeping your rangefinder and kestrel in your carry on so that you know right where it is and your minimizing loss of gear if your checked bags get rerouted.

Can't comment too much since I use an SKB case and just wrap all my stuff in clothing to prevent damage. It's also a good way to get a few extra clothing items in.

If you're cutting a pattern out of the foam I suggest you get a lock of some sort and fit it with that on the rifle. I pull out my bolt and lock the gun with a snake lock for some added security.

Optics and all stay on my person. It's too easy for someone to steal those items since they are smaller.

I flew with a rifle in September to SLC with Southwest. The ammo and bolt stayed with the gun in the case. Southwest and TSA confirmed this for me. The case has to be lockable and cannot be able to pry it open (like on one end) with the locks on. It needs to be a pretty good case. The really cheap plastic ones won't work.

Come to the baggage check with the gun in the case locked. Tell them you need to declare a firearm. They will give you a form to fill out and a worker will take you over to a different counter to check the gun. Once they check it you lock it back up and head to your gate.

I also put my optics in my carry on.

My case laid out. Ammo and heavy end towards wheels of case with lighter stuff near barrel.
