If the Nosler's are basically shortened versions of the RUM (and maybe I don't have that right), what would be the reason to go with those over a RUM? Nosler is loading their stuff faster than the RUM's in their product line, but using less powder maybe? So is barrel life the chief driver? Is there really much difference in barrel life between a 28 Nosler and a 7MM RUM? Or a 30 Nosler and a .300 RUM? Just curious ... someone knows a heck of a lot more than me and can explain the why's I am sure. Just curious. If companies can't come up with something they say is the latest greatest then they don't succeed. When it comes to rifle ballistics etc. It's pretty much been done; and will be hard to beat .. It has all been done in the past, most of this stuff is just rehashing history with a new name and slightly different case. Technological advances in bullets and powder are much more exciting than these new calibers. They make much more difference than a new caliber name. The 6.5x55 swede has been doing everything the 6.5 Creedmoor has for over 120 years. Modern actions, powders, and bullets are what have advanced since 120 years ago. If you are not running a heavy high BC bullet in the RUM you really are not doing anything the 7mm isn't capable of matching if not coming very close. Both fully capable of long shots, but built for different purposes. .300RUM pushing 215 Hybrid @ 3100fps, 7RM pushing 180 Hybrid @ 3000fps. Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

I'll have to go back and check Velocities but I want to say 3200 and just over 3K respectively. lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 24, 2017 The .300RUM really shines with the heavies, I don't know why they didn't market it more for 180s on the light end, and 210-220 on the heavy side. Even the 230s pushed to 3000+. If you want to shoot a 180, might as well shoot a .30-06 to .300WM. I would work up a load with a 200-215 bullet and hammer game for a long ways. For the 7RM, go 168-180gr. bullets and stretch it's legs too. You won't be sorry. 1 Share this post Link to post Share on other sites

Shooting 180 Barnes in the 300 rum is like buying 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel truck to haul around a quad. You have the potential to haul bigger and better things but you aren't.
