lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 17, 2017 The 180 Hybrid is "not intended for hunting". So you must only plan on shooting paper and steel.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted January 17, 2017 Man I'm jealous! Kyle does some awesome work! Have fun shooting that beauty! Kurt You better hit him up for that family discount!Ha! Yea, I'm pretty blessed to be his cousin. I go to him with tons of my questions. Still can't afford one at this time though... one of these days it will happen. Atleast you have a shirt.... all i got from him is a badass rifle!
sjvcon Report post Posted January 20, 2017 So somebody clue me in. If the Nosler's are basically shortened versions of the RUM (and maybe I don't have that right), what would be the reason to go with those over a RUM? Nosler is loading their stuff faster than the RUM's in their product line, but using less powder maybe? So is barrel life the chief driver? Is there really much difference in barrel life between a 28 Nosler and a 7MM RUM? Or a 30 Nosler and a .300 RUM? Just curious ... someone knows a heck of a lot more than me and can explain the why's I am sure. Just curious. Was thinking of doing something custom and maybe going with a custom action vs working over a M70 Win Classic. Thoughts?
lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 21, 2017 No feasible difference between 28 Nosler and 7RUM. Or 30 Nosler and 300RUM. Just the new kid on the block. Like the 6.5 Creedmoor craze. Really no different than a 260 Rem, 6.5x55 Swede, etc. Like my 6.5 SLR. Just the fad. But choices are always good.

If companies can't come up with something they say is the latest greatest then they don't succeed. When it comes to rifle ballistics etc. It's pretty much been done; and will be hard to beat .. Hoss50 Report post Posted January 21, 2017 Like mentioned, they need something new to market. Whats old is new. It has all been done in the past, most of this stuff is just rehashing history with a new name and slightly different case. Technological advances in bullets and powder are much more exciting than these new calibers. They make much more difference than a new caliber name. The 6.5x55 swede has been doing everything the 6.5 Creedmoor has for over 120 years. Modern actions, powders, and bullets are what have advanced since 120 years ago. sjvcon Report post Posted January 24, 2017 Ok ... so I've got a 7 Rem Mag and a 300 RUM and feel like I don't need both. I was thinking to keep one a make a 28 Nosler, but that sounds like it might just be a waste of money. So if you had those two, which would you keep? 7 Rem Mag for better bullet characteristics, or 300 RUM for speed and flatness of trajectory???
Hoss50 Report post Posted January 24, 2017 300 RUM if you are going to keep one only and not build anything. I would keep them both, but I have a rule where I almost never sell guns...

If you are not running a heavy high BC bullet in the RUM you really are not doing anything the 7mm isn't capable of matching if not coming very close. Pick which ever one you can shoot the best and more comfortable with.
lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 24, 2017 Keep both. I have both too. My .300RUM is a heavy LR hunting rifle. The 7RM is a lighter carry elk rifle. Both fully capable of long shots, but built for different purposes. .300RUM pushing 215 Hybrid @ 3100fps, 7RM pushing 180 Hybrid @ 3000fps.
sjvcon Report post Posted January 24, 2017 Generally shooting Barnes TTSX 180's in the RUM and Nosler ETip 150's in the 7. I'll have to go back and check Velocities but I want to say 3200 and just over 3K respectively. I shoot them both pretty well...almost the same gun really
lancetkenyon Report post Posted January 24, 2017 The .300RUM really shines with the heavies, I don't know why they didn't market it more for 180s on the light end, and 210-220 on the heavy side. Even the 230s pushed to 3000+. If you want to shoot a 180, might as well shoot a .30-06 to .300WM. I would work up a load with a 200-215 bullet and hammer game for a long ways. For the 7RM, go 168-180gr. bullets and stretch it's legs too. You won't be sorry.
STOMP442 Report post Posted January 24, 2017 What Lance said. You are giving up a lot of potential in that RUM. Shooting 180 Barnes in the 300 rum is like buying 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel truck to haul around a quad. You have the potential to haul bigger and better things but you aren't.
