Sam Report post Posted December 29, 2016 It has been quite a few years since I hunted the HAM hunt. As I am getting ready for this year's hunt, I am thinking of changing up the load and bullets that I use. I have a T/C New Englander 50 Cal and in year's past, the load I use is 90 grains of Pyrodex with a 355 grain Prelubricated Maxi-Hunter. This has been the best shooting load out of this gun. I have also shot a 370 grain Maxi-Balls with good results. I killed a javelina a few years back using this load with a 355 grain Maxi-Hunter. Here is my question - I need to buy more bullets and shoot a bit before the hunt. It looks like the Maxi-Hunter now comes in 350 grains and 275 grains. Do you guys think a 275 grain Maxi-Hunter is adequate for javelina? If so, do you think I can get away with 80 grains of powder? I know I will have to experiment a bit just wondering what you guys think. I use open sights and am good to about 80 yards. I just don't want to have to adjust sights and may just stick with the 350 grain........thanks.
Kaffer62 Report post Posted December 29, 2016 Yes. I have used 250 grains for quite some time now with no problems on deer elk or pigs. That was with 100grns of powder.

elkaholic Report post Posted December 30, 2016 i'm sure the 275 with 90-100 grains of powder will have no problem in dropping a piggy. just like changing anything - get to a range -site it in -make the adjustments so bullet is hitting where you aim - put it in the kill zone - tag your piggy but if you plan on using the gun for bigger species - I wouldn't change anything buy the bullets you normally shoot - the gun likes them - no messin around - take it to the range shoot - your good to go as usual! no hassle no fuss no extra expense.

Sam Report post Posted December 30, 2016 Thanks for the input. I am going to try the 275 and see what happens. I am hoping that I can shoot a bit farther without too much drop.
