Daughter takes a thug of a buck!

Recommended Posts

The 2016 Jrs deer hunt was tough with very hot temperatures the duration of the hunt. The deer were bedding a half hour after daylight to escape the heat. They would get up to feed just before dark, making any late stalks, needing more time to close the deal. Knowing the unit fairly well, we were able to locate a fair amount of bucks, still in bachelor groups, but not many big 'ol thugs we were hoping to see on this early juniors hunt. We stayed mobile for the hunt, so we could look at several areas that might be holding the right buck. Glassing from sun up to sun down, we would run out of shooting light on three occasions on bucks that would break 100". On the sixth day of a seven day hunt, we located a very pretty 95+ buck we watched at a 160 yards for over ten minutes. My daughter, Hunter said she would continue to hold out for a bigger buck. I couldn't even got her to look at it through her rifle scope. We returned to the same area on the last day to help a good buddy and his son get on a buck. As we scoured the mountains, I found two good bucks on a distant ridge. A typical 3x3 just over 100 and a 4x3 looking to be 105. Hunter took a look at them thru the 15's. She said "I want to shoot that big 4x3 or nothing at all. We made our move on the buck. An hour and a half later we were we up right above the two bedded bucks at less than 100 yards. Unable to see exactly where they were bedding, I left Hunter to cover possible escape routes. I moved 75-80 yards away from her to try and locate the bucks. As I was trying to find the bedded bucks from a different angle, I bumped them and they trotted up the opposing hillside at 150 yards. As I watched them trotting up hill, I heard the crack of Hunters 270. I watched as the big buck rolled backwards down the hill. I yelled out "buck down"! I made my way back to Hunter. She said "Dad, I just whacked a big some beach"! I told her I saw it all go down from where I was. She said she dropped to her butt because the bipod was too short and shot the buck with her elbow on her knee for support. She was a happy camper to say the least. From the start of the hunt, Hunter said she would hold out to shoot a much bigger buck than the the 90 incher she shot last year. She stuck to her guns on that. Hunters buck stretched the tape at 108 4/8. At 15, this is her best and third coues buck. I can't wait to see what 2017 holds........

Our buddy, Albert was able to capture a great big congratulatory happy daddy and daughter hug. This buck will known as 32. It was the 32 buck we found during the seven day hunt.

Great story! To be able to move from your daughter while that close, you obviously had confidence she could make the shot on her own. Love that extra point down by the base.
