ready2hunt Report post Posted December 27, 2016 Any CWT members that are machinist's? My brother and I are thinking of getting some barrel/bolt work done. Not set in stone but I would like to get a price gauge. I have talked to some out of state companies that do good work but I like passing my $$$ locally if possible. Again, just getting a feel for what is out there. If you know someone that does it or has a machine that does it and wants some side money let me know. PM me if that is better. mattys281 Report post Posted December 28, 2016 I have a cnc mill with a 4th axis that could pretty easily be made to do either straight or helical fluting. However, I think I'd probably recommend going with someone that has experience in doing this specific type of work, as there is undoubtedly some hidden tricks to the process that may bite the inexperienced in the butt and consequently damage your barrel. There is a lot of stress introduced into metal when it is machined, and it is very common for metal to relieve itself when machined and bend. If your barrel comes out bent, it would need to be straightened. It may stay straight as an arrow. I have know idea as I've never cut a barrel, but I have machined a lot of butterfly shafts and gear shafts for aircraft engines, and these will very often bend, making straightening after machining a normal part of the process. And this is dealing with parts that are made out of very expensive high quality metals that have been heattreated and stress relieved, yet they still often bend when you cut metal off them. I dont know what high dollar match barrels are made of, but ive read that stock barrels are often pretty cheap steel. Good luck on your project.

L Cazador Report post Posted December 28, 2016 You should consider that fluting a barrel should also include stress relief.

Big Browns Report post Posted December 28, 2016 I highly recommend calling Eric (Speedygoss). He has been a machinest for almost 15 years and has worked the past few years at Gunworks. He recently started his own aircraft machine shop as well as a gunsmith buisness. His weapons are EXTREMELY accurate! Just remember the reason all these gun smith's charge the amount they charge is because it's a lot of time and money to re-tool their machines for a specific job. Gunsmithing is NOT cheap! Finding someone you trust with your weapon and money can be very frustrating. That's why I highly recommend calling Eric!!!!!

AxisWorks LLC Report post Posted January 1, 2017 Hey guys, Thanks for the kind words Adam. Before I get to involved in advertising here on the forum I've reached out to Amanda a couple times via Email inquiring about becoming a vendor for CWT. She hasn't gotten back to me yet so if any of you have an alternative rout of contacting her please let me/her know. I'll post a link to our website as soon as I make contact with Amanda and make sure we're not stepping on any toes before we're setup as a CWT vendor. Until then I appreciate all the members who have contacted us via word of mouth that we have been able to provide services for in the past. We have spent the last few weeks moving the shop from Chandler to Tempe and we are excited to grow the firearm side of the buisiness this upcoming year. Happy new year to all of you from the team at AxisWorks. Have fun and be safe tonight. Eric--
