curmudgen Report post Posted September 29, 2007 I'm new to this board which I've browsed with pleasure for a couple of years. This is my first inquiry. I've got the early hunt. Any ideas on strategies to deal with temperatures in the 80s (probably) and the full moon? Curmudgen
Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 29, 2007 Welcome. Enjoy the hike out after dark by the light of the full moon. I once noticed deer to be more active as the sun was setting and the full moon was rising. By the end of the hunt, you may have some moonlight to hike into your spot before sunrise. Keep hydrated, glass from the shade, glass into shady bedding areas during the day, and watch any deer trails to water holes during the midday. Wear one of those "cool ties" around your neck. Kevin Report post Posted October 2, 2007 Curmudgen, welcome to the site and I like your handle; describes me pretty well! As to your question, those conditions can make for some tough hunting. Add to it a 30mph wind and you can glass for hours with little luck. Usually if your patient enough you'll catch a deer standing to stretch or move to the opposite side of a shady spot. Like Doug said, stay late because they tend to move just before dark. At least thats been my experience. I usually run out of patience and start still hunting areas that I think would be cooler--dense brush on northern slopes. Good luck, Kevin

m gardner Report post Posted October 2, 2007 We hunted the early part of the bowseason during the full moon and 95 degree temps and had activity during mid day. They liked the shady spots in the pines or the ravines. Mark

.270 Report post Posted October 3, 2007 it's a proven fact that there are just as many deer during a full moon as there are at other times of the moon cycle. just hunt. deer feed when they're hungry and drink when they're thirsty. moon phases have little effect on things, folks just like to use it as an excuse. i prefer to hunt during a full moon. they seem to feed later in the morning and get up earlier in the evening. and they're still there, you just have to find em.
