257wby Report post Posted December 20, 2016 I have a question for you guys. On my AR, I have a 1:9 twist barrel that shoots lights out with 55 gr rounds, and typically a 1:7 shoots heavier rounds better. How does a bolt action rifle have a 1:12, and what can be expected from 55 gr rounds. Thanks
lancetkenyon Report post Posted December 20, 2016 A 1:12 should be able to stabilize up to a 60-62 grain bullet just fine. 55 grain will be great in it.
Big or Bust Report post Posted December 20, 2016 Yup - 55's great in 12's... A 12 generally will not do the 62 ttsx, nor the 60 NP. Might get lucky though... Sometimes a 65 SGK or 64 PP will... More twist is never bad....
dse Report post Posted December 20, 2016 Are you looking to buy a bolt gun, or already have one with a 1 in 12? There are several bolt rifles that come with a 1 in 9.

L Cazador Report post Posted December 21, 2016 You're stabilizing length not weight. Copper bullets like the Barnes tend to be longer so a 12 twist may not stabilize such bullets in a given weight range. Contact the bullet manufacturer for the best twist on a given bullet design and weight. You can usually overspin a bullet and still get pretty good accuracy as in your 9 twist with 55 grain bullets.
