Joe Kauffman Report post Posted September 26, 2007 My 9 year old (will be 10 Oct 18th) was lucky enough to pull a leftover 36A November Coues tag and a juniors only muzzy 39 javelina tag this year after being skunked the first go around. The hunts overlap a weekend so I'm trying to bust some serious butt and learn some spots in both of these units so he can hopefully have a successful first hunting trip into the wild with dad. But I thought I better break down and ask if anyone might have any good starting points for us? Obviously for his first 2 hunts he's not looking for anything huge, and he would be just as happy with a spike as a monster. Which was awesome to hear since we get so caught up with sizes and trophys... Thanks for any help and I hope to have some smiling kid photos to post come November! stanley Report post Posted September 26, 2007 I've got the 36A early hunt, and my son has the 36A Junior hunt. I'd be happy to share a couple of starting points with you. Basically though, if he's hunting coues then you really can't go wrong almost ANYWHERE in the unit. There are muleys down low, but coues everywhere. Lots of folks focus high. I prefer to focus more on getting away from people, as opposed to what elevation I'm hunting. Check-out any of the roads off 286 on the west side, or off of the Arivaca road on the SE. Lots of good country all over. Send me a PM as a reminder if you would like, but I'll try to remember to send you some scouting info prior to the hunt. Good luck! S. JIM WHITE Report post Posted October 15, 2007 Joe: Congratulations to your son on the draw. Just a quick FYI, I give a 10 to 15 % discount on all of my equipment to Jr. Hunters. IM pretty sure Amanda will not mind if you hit me up directly for that discount. I have a lot of things that Amanda has not had a chance to put on her site. Give me a call if you think you will need anything for the Boy on his hunt. Take Care and Best of luck on the hunt Jim White 928-635-5316

Stanley, I'm sure you meant the EAST side of 286. Just so joe's not confused. Joe, Good luck on your hunt. Finding coues deer in this unit shouldn't be difficult. With youth hunters it's always just getting close enough for the shot and connecting which is the ultimate test. I'm sure you'll do fine. Besides, you can't go wrong with just being out there with him!!!!
COUESAZ Report post Posted October 15, 2007 Joe good to see you around the coues site from time to time. I do not know this area well enough to help you out. I hope some on the site can help you get your son a shot. For anyone wondering if Joe is an E scouter i will vouch that he is not. He is a succesfull hunter and helps others out all the time. So i hope he will be treated the same way by those of us on this site that can return some help to him. Good luck and looking forward to seeing the Photos. I am sure there will be one. AzTrapper Report post Posted October 16, 2007 I live close to Pima Mine Rd and Mission Rd. So I spend some time close to home looking at wildlife and such. I have the Nov. Whitetail hunt but can say there is a fair number of bucks in the area south of Pima Mine Rd. and North of Mageeville. When I am bored i go to the west end of Pima Mine rd. and glass from there and south and have watched both whitetail and mule deer. Access can be a little trickly so let me know if you need any help in that department. AzTrapper
Joe Kauffman Report post Posted October 17, 2007 Thanks for the info guys! I just returned from a few days of family get-together time in Mexico (would have rather spent the weekend scouting!...but). Jade, thanks for the kind words. I don't know if it's a pride thing or what but not being able to get enough scouting time in a new unit, especially when it's my son's first tag, has caused me to ask for help! Luckily this forum is full of awesome people willing to help out youth hunters. We're both so pumped to get out on his first hunt that just seeing some coues bucks would tickle his fancy plenty. Getting a shot will just be a bonus. Heck, I remember my first couple of hunts when I was 10 & 11 almost better than my more recent successful hunts. AzTrapper, Pima Mine? Gold prospectors like Jade and I might have to check that out . I'd definatly be interested in checking that area out. I found it in my topo software but don't know anything about the access. Jim, what equipment do you sell? Thanks again guys! You've been alot of help. Joe Kauffman

Joe Kauffman Report post Posted October 17, 2007 It's an animated GIF. If you have Photoshop, Imageready or Fireworks it's pretty easy to build, but you have to keep the file size small since most forums only allow a certain KB for avatars. If you have couple pics send them to me and I'll make one up for you. Joe
AzTrapper Report post Posted October 19, 2007 Just let me know if you want to know how to get into the area around me, I would be more than happy to show you so maybe you can find a nice buck for you son. I am starting to spend a day or two a week out looking for a decent buck for me and starting to do more predator calling. AzTrapper
