MT_Sourdough Report post Posted December 8, 2016 This will be my first time hunting turkeys. I drew the early hunt in unit 8 and 10. I ordered a decoy that was on clearance, but I wonder how effective they are. So I was curious if any of ya'll are using decoys for turkeys.?. I'd like to hear your thoughts. Big Browns Report post Posted December 8, 2016 I use them all the time. They work great most of the time. I highly recommend the Avian X decoys. They are very realistic looking.

I recommend a Jake decoy, though, if you are going with a mixed flock. Out here I've seen too many toms run from a full strutter decoy or anything remotely resembling a mature tom. Back in Iowa where I grew up, mature, dominant toms are thick and won't hesitate to challenge a strutter, but I don't see it enough out here to feel good about using a full strutter. Jake decoy all the way.
brian390 Report post Posted December 11, 2016 Either way it's good if you use them or if you don't use them. I rarely use them because I don't care for carrying them around with me all day. Also, you might want to hide it somewhere on you while you're walking so that you're not mistaken for a turkey. You'll like spring turkey hunting. Good luck on your hunt.
MT_Sourdough Report post Posted December 25, 2016 Thanks for the replies. I now have two Dave Smith hen decoys and they look great. I took a chance on a Flambeau Jake decoy that was on sale for $17. Thought it might work but I am not impressed and I may just use it for an archery target. I think I might get the Avian X LCD quarter strut decoy. I didn't want to get a full strut at this point as I am afraid they may scare away as many gobblers as they attract. This guy above, on the other hand, looks like a 4 eyed pencil neck geek asking to get his lunch money taken from him.
Swivelhead Report post Posted December 25, 2016 Watching a gobbler beat up your jake deke is a good time. I use an avian X.
IA Born Report post Posted December 28, 2016 If you're spending the money on DSDs, you might as well spend the money on either a DSD jake or the Avian X Jake you mention. I have that Avian X jake and its AWESOME!

I have that Avian X jake and its AWESOME! ordered And if you're hunting over DSD hens, I'm hunting with you! I went with the Avian X hens because I couldn't justify the price of DSDs to my wife. I have several friends back in Iowa who use nothing but DSDs! Good luck and have fun!
GrantHunts Report post Posted February 5, 2017 My personal favorite is the Flextone Funky Chicken.. durable, simple, and effective! It's freakin hilarious too The secret to the Flextone unit is how wimpy it looks. The unit's elongated neck, high up stance, and meager build makes other gobblers go crazy. Cheap too. Like others have said the Avian X line of decoys is great too.

'Ike' Report post Posted February 8, 2017 how many decoys does a guy need when you set up for turkey? 1 is good? I use 1 to 3 just depending...The killer is a Jake standing over a hen, that usually gets the best results, at least for me!
trphyhntr Report post Posted February 9, 2017 Right on thanks. Maybe I'll try it this year on the archery hunt for a weekend
