CatfishKev Report post Posted December 7, 2016 I'm a teacher too, had a student this morning say that penguins are amphibians because they live on land and water. Do you know Spider-Dan? I'm pretty sure he's the only other dude on the face of the earth that's a Steelers fan and a Converge fan (all time favorite indie metal band). I pulled up behind him at Schlotskys and saw his bumper stickers. Had to stick my head out the window and have the funniest looking conversation ever. After a two year degree I transferred to a 4 year to be a Tech Ed teacher and took a year off with two left. Never went back. Now I have two companies and hate it. Glad I'm not a teacher, I think i'd end up slamming a punks head against a wall and getting fired for it. Kids have zero respect these days.

PRDATR Report post Posted December 8, 2016 Some days I know you all have encountered, you just gotta wonder what am I doing wrong??? I teach two concepts, cutting on the line and leaving the line. In this case the student was supposed to cut outside the line as close to the line as possible but leave the line!!! line.JPG This kid obviously did not understand cutting close to the line inside or out!!!! Great teaching moment after the fact!!! Or maybe a little more teaching before hand and student evaluation. Sorry but unless the kid is really remedial or challenged there is not reason for that to happen in a wood working class. I took "shop" every year (mandatory) from 7th grade through 12th. Everything from metal casting to welding to printing and sheetmetal/iron working class. But my love was wood working and in my senior year I had two classes, one was cabinet making and the other was boat building. I built a hydroplane and my friend built a 16' runabout, way back in 1970. We averaged 15-20 kids per class, maybe your class is larger but there is no reason for that to have progressed to the point that the project became such a failure and resource was wasted. CatfishKev Report post Posted December 8, 2016 No disrespect predator but that sounds awfully harsh. You probably achieved more because you liked it. And a teacher still has to move the class forward whether one or two are not catching on (assuming of course all safety precautions have been gone over). When I was in wood shop in the tenth grade I intentionally set a tape measure on the red line of a radial arm saw. I intended to slowly bring the blade back and knick the thumb button of the tape ever so gently, not really giving any real thought to "how fu*#kin stupid am I right now?". The blade pulled it under in a tremendous thud and the whole shop stopped what they were doing to look at me. I did something stupid, real stupid. I coulda got hurt or even worse someone else could have. I can't blame my teacher though, he was a good teacher. It was all my fault. Now add double the kids in the room you had with an unsurpassed lack of discipline and respect towards adults. I'm sure it ain't easy being a teacher and they dang sure don't get paid enough for the little monsters they have to deal with.

I do take full responsibility and agree, that type of error is not an acceptable level of "competency" which is a word I have on every page of their folder. There is a vast range of skill level, manipulative dexterity, fear or lack of fear both which can cause harm. I grew up under a similar educational experience as PRDTR, driving tractors, 4-H, FFA, heavy exposure to working with animals and farming. Many of the students I get have very little exposure to such things. I don't really get to bent out of shape because for most of them it is a first time experience, wood shop that is, 7th and 8th graders, girls and boys from all different backgrounds. He will get better at it and that is my objective, after safety of course!
