Battery Powered 2 way radios.

Recommended Posts

Looking for good radios that DO NOT charge on a charger. I want ones where I can swap store bought batteries out. I know this has been covered but pretty much all posts have been about the charged type. Looking for $100 or less per pair (if possible).

Thanks

Look at the Motorola Talk about 35 mile radios. I know they come with rechargeable batteries but I think you have the option of dropping double A's into them rather than the rechargeable batteries.

I just bought a pair of Midland radios that are kind of interesting. They have rechargeable batteries in them, but charge on a USB cord like his cell phone. You can also take those batteries out and use Triple A's. So far so good although I've only used it one time on one hunt

Yeah I think most of the Midland have rechargeable pack but you can take that pack out and replace with regular batteries if needed. Hadn't seen the USB charging option...that's cool.

I have an older pair of Midlands. I really like them. You can turn off all of the beeps and noises. Also have the call/vibrate, which is critical for silent communication. You can remove the recharge battery pack and use AA's. Not sure if the newer Midlands are similar, as far as turning off all the beeps. I have some limited experience with the Motorola radios. Couldn't turn off all the beeps...no call/vibrate...and had trouble communicating with Midland radios.

My Midlands allow turning off all the beeps except if the other end has a beep at end of transmission that comes through. I've turned that off on both of mine, but my buddy hadn't so I got beeps from him. Not a huge deal since I was using earpiece. As for everybody and their brother on, maybe we got lucky but found a channel/subchannel combo that must not be commonly used at least where we hunt.

Only time I have ever heard other people on the radio is when it's illegal guiding in their dope or bodies. But I also don't use radios all that often.

The beeps can be turned off on the Motorolas as well. My experience is that the Motorolas transmit better than the Midlands as long as you have more than half battery. The rechargeable batteries that come with them are junk, three AAA last much longer and transmit better. As others have said, getting Motorolas and Midlands to communicate is spotty at best.
