thunderbolt Report post Posted September 19, 2007 Went camping this weekend with my kids, mother and father, sister, brother in law and there two kids. My mother has not camped with any of the family in about 10- 15 years because of an illness she has and she's going blind. She gets cold very easy and really doesn't like roughing it in the wilderness anymore. To make her comfortable I took my camping trailor up to east fork. The second night she asked if I had a heater in the trailor and i told her yes and i would get it running. She asked if there is a possiblity of affixiation because the use of a propane heater. I told her i really didn't know, so i cracked a couple of the windows in the trailor to be on safe side. That whole evening i was worried about what my mom had asked me so i didn't have a good nights sleep. My question is, can their be a possiblity of carbon monoxide posioning from a propane heater? If so how do you prevent it? And, what kind of changes do i need to make to my trailor to keep it from happening? Although it was my mothers first trip in many years in her condition, she is already planning another trip next year. We (the family) had a fantastic time having all of us there. It was like being kids again.
Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted September 19, 2007 Maybe in an old trailer...... but, I wouldn't sweat it in a newer one. I am sure GameHauler can answer that one for you for sure!
TATAat27 Report post Posted September 19, 2007 I have an 03 pioneer and have used my heater many times with the windows shut and never had a problem.
COUESAZ Report post Posted September 19, 2007 Get a sensor for it and that should help you fill a bit better.
Huntn coues Report post Posted September 19, 2007 Yep get a carbon monoxide detector and install it. I know how you feel cause I have felt that way before. There was this guy where I was raised who died in his trailor due to this and it has alway's bothered me since. What ever you do do not use your stove to heat your trailor with when you go to sleep. They do make catalytic heaters that have saftey switches(low oxygen) on em. But lets get the real answer from MIKEY. Wake up MIKE.
GameHauler Report post Posted September 19, 2007 MORN"N The furnace is safe if it is in good working order. The burn chamber is a sealed unit which draws fresh air from outside and then discharges it back outside. the warm air you feel is from inside air being blown over the outside of the burn chamber. As long as the burn chamber is not cracked there is no way for carbon momoxide to enter the living area. Hope you can sleep better now Mike
DesertBull Report post Posted September 19, 2007 I know a guy that used to turn on all four burners of the camp stove and crack the top vent. He did that for years without a problem although he is nutty as fruitcake.
Huntn coues Report post Posted September 19, 2007 Isn't gas heavier than air?? Doesn't it settle towards the floor ?? The guy in Pine thought it was safe as well to use his stove to heat with untill it killed him.
thunderbolt Report post Posted September 20, 2007 Thanks for your responses guys. I really like the idea of using a carbon monoxide detector, really simple fix. Its a really old camping trailer, a 1968 holiday rambler. the furnace was pulled out and a propane wall heater was put in. I'll be checking wally world this evening to check them out. Thanks again. Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 20, 2007 Isn't gas heavier than air?? Doesn't it settle towards the floor ?? Air is about 78% nitrogen gas, N2, which has a molecular weight of 28. Carbon Monoxide gas, CO, also has a molecular weight of 28, so the CO would be distributed uniformly in the air having equal densities. Vapors from gasoline and propane are denser than air, so would settle to the floor.

I think the gravitational pull on the earth when the sun is setting and the moon is full has something to do with it as well.

RR You just reminded me of Will Farrell in the debate in that movie OLD SCHOOL... You know where he suddenly turned into a genius.. the almost passes out... THAT WAS CLASSIC. I bet DB could make a athletic cup for himself with a pinon nut shell and some rubber bands... hehehehe.. Jason
