Anyone elk hunting in 5BN(pics added)?

Recommended Posts

Just curious as to if anyone else has this unit this year. My brother has been up there since last week and is having a tough go at it. Very few bugles, and lots of wind. I was with him for the first three days. We had a pretty good opportunity on Saturday, but needed about 25 more yards that we just couldn't get. We didn't want to blow that bull out of the area, so we quietly backed out so we could hunt him again. He has passed on a couple rag horns while sitting water in the evenings and that's about it. He is staying for the whole hunt and I will join him again this weekend.

Again, just curious if anyone has had any luck.

Thanks

was in 5bs.....same there tough hunting conditions...almost seemed like a late archery bull hunt...not one elk was making a sound in our area....just had to guess on where they were going to be .too many people people hunting with quads...everyday you hear a quad..then it would turn off...next you hear some very weird sounding bugles....no response they hop on their quad and try a new area.....the elk in the area we were very very call shy....calling was useless....thanks to road hunters who were over calling....not a peep the last two days...way too many yahoos out there...Today was fricken cold and clear thought it would have kicked up some bugling...but nothing. we were having plenty of luck getting on bulls besides all this....good luck

p.s use quads for getting to a hunting area and dont use them to hunt with....except for the people who are somewhat disabled and need to use them. get off your buttts and hike....it was a frustrating and poor display of lazy hunters this weekend....shameful if you ask me....another thing we had fun playing with a couple dumb hunters who were not even twenty yards from their truck trying to call "nothing"....i had a good laugh we bugled a couple times close to them and they kept responding with a humorous amount of bugling and cow calls....then we started breaking branches.....it was hilarious..they thought we were a big ol' bull. i hate road hunting

blake, just keep working at it...it will pay off....im sure you know that...good luck

Thanks Ryan,

He is up there for the whole hunt so I am sure he will eventually hit at least some of the rut. We haven't had much trouble with other hunters. He is hunting near the border of another unit and the only hunters we have spoke to are hunting that other unit. There were several camps near his, but we never ran into those guys in the field.

The bulls so far don't seem very interested in the calls, but I don't think it's from being call shy. I think they just aren't ready yet. Hopefully it will happen soon. The days are getting shorter and the weather cooler.

Casey,

Tell your buddy congrats! Any chance we get to see a pic?

I just got back from there last night. I've been up there since last Wed. I was up in the North part of the unit and had the same experience. A few bugles Fri morning but didn't hear anything since. Hot and Windy in the afternoon and just like you said no interest in the calls. I don't think they moved into their breeding grounds yet, we had to go deep to find anything and the wind would play havoc on your stalk. Really need the temps to fall another 10 to 15 degrees and they should start moving some. Good luck to your brother, I'll be back up there Fri after work.

Firstcoueswas80-Congrats to your buddy that's a nice bull for that unit.

Blake and Brandon--just in case you have not heard there is supposed to be a storm coming in that is said to have some snow attached to it for elevations that are higher than 6 thousand feet. If this happens life will get very exciting for you.

Blake,

Wish you were with me in New Mexico buddy--it was short and sweet but a lot of fun!!

We thought the same thing, with the exact same results you had....Hopefully with a storm coming this weekend the bulls will feel alittle more like playing.

One more report from this morning. My brother said the bulls were really getting going. Once again, though, the wind really screwed things up. He got right in the middle of several bulls letting it rip, but the wind wouldn't make up it's mind on which way it wanted to blow. He couldn't seal the deal, but he said it made him feel better knowing that they were at least bugling. I know what it's like to hunt by yourself. If things aren't going well, it's really hard to stay positive. I think today did wonders for his optimism.

I knew this storm was on it's way, but I didn't know they were talking snow!! That should help things a bunch.

Terry,

I wish I was there in NM as well. I heard it was a short, but fun hunt! Congrats to you and your client.

Hey P&Y, what site do you pull your weather satellite pics from? I use the radar from weatherunderground.com, but I like the detail on the one you posted. Sorry for hi-jacking the thread; just curious...

finally killed a little 6x7 yesterday. had to pack him out two miles, ouch. it was a tough year for me tho. due mainly to a few near misses.  one area we were hunting had some nice elk in it and a lion came in a changed their habits by about 2.5 miles. called in two yesterday. some days they would come to the call and others they had no interest. i think it is only going to get better from now on tho. the two we called in yesterday even brought their cows with them. some days we walked 10 miles, others only 5. we only found three sheds the whole time.
