Groupings vs BC

Recommended Posts

I'm running some loads for a 6.5 CM. I got a Berger 140 H VLD at .420 MOA ------and a .560 MOA ELD-X 143 grain.

According to Hornady the eld is at .625 BC. VS Berger at .60 BC.

With such a close grouping should you stay with the Better BC or is the rule of thumb is stick with the better grouping always????

I'd want to consider the bullet construction vs. expansion velocity window for each at your intended range. If equal, on to step 2.

Are you talking just the best group for each load or some large number of groups average? What range? If statistically sound, on to step 3.

You could cross check the MOA difference in wind drifts at the max range you wish to shoot and see if its greater than the 0.14 MOA grouping difference. I'd expect it is.

Or I would would just flip a coin and go kill stuff as from field positions you'll never discern 0.14 MOA (1.4 inches at 1000 yards).

It's easy to get wrapped around the axle with this stuff... :-)

Sounds like a keeper though!

How many groups have you shot with each to determine actual accuracy?

One .4" vs .5" group is not necessarily telling you the truth.

Either of those bullets will kill game well. Pick which you would rather shoot and continue load development and practice.

Couldn't hurt to also see how those groups hold at distance. Shoot them both at 500+ yards and check the groups.

That's a good idea. That will probably chose the outcome

They were just 3 shot groups, with multiple loads. I shot well over 70 rounds that day. I have 4 loads to mess with now and I'll start shooting 4-5 shot groups on each one. I guess once I nail those down I'll test it out to 500 yard grouping to see which flies better as suggested by sell4soul.
