In the Market for a .243 or .270

Recommended Posts

I agree with trphyhntr, my 7mm rem mag shoots like a 243 with a break on it, good luck with whatever you choose!

No. It doesn't. Unless you are comparing a 12# 7RM with a 6# .243. I hear comments like this all the time. They are misleading. A brake DOES tame a 7RM to very acceptable and manageable levels for kids, however. But still not like a .243.

I think an 11 or 12 year old kid, unless they are very recoil sensitive, could shoot a 7RM with a good break just as easy as a .270 Win w. a break, and have more options for bullet weights and types, with just a bit better speed, in the future. But a .270 has taken tons of game in the past.

I dont think every kid needs a muzzle break. Guns have recoil, I didn't get a muzzle break when I was a kid. We didn't have internet either. ;)

Come on guys you know what i meant! What do you guys think about the 7-08 and the .280?

I use both myself. 243 will do it all so either of the others gives you more punch. 7-08 is usually what everyone speaks of getting for their kids.

I have had a 7 Rem Mag since I was 11 with a good break. Its a 700 BDL synthetic stainless. Kicked less than the m77 ruger 243 I had as a kid.

I think all kids should wear plugs for all shooting. I lost a lot of hearing in my left ear from shooting rifles and shotgun. I don't shoot anything without plugs now.
