Lets talk about knives

Recommended Posts

I am looking to purchase a new knife this year for my elk hunt. I would like it to be a "do all" type of knife. I prefer smaller blades, and like the idea of it being able to fold up. I would like to hear what you guys are using for the task of gutting and skinning. David

I like the Buck knives, I mostly use the Zipper but it's not a folder. I also have one of these that is a folder and I like it. It seems to hold a good edge.

I also have a Buck - the Vanguard which is not a folder but a great fixed blade knife with ATS-34 steel.

For a folder, Buck is just coming out with the Kalinga. It's priced a little on the high side, but it looks like a very sweet knife.

Other brands I'd consider are Kershaw, Gerber, and Benchmade to name a few.

Still using my Case XX two blade folder that I have had for over 30 years. It did the job(gut, skin, bone out) on a deer, antelope and an elk all in one year and just needed a light touch up between animals.

I use Knives of Alaska (The cape knife) and Bark river Knives. Here are a few of the bark rivers i use and have sold the most of. The top one is a fox river, The next is a North star ( more of a bush craft or survival knife), the third is a mini skinner ( i have sold more of this knife to members of the site) The last one is a Mini Canadian and is a great little blade.

I have a father in law who is a custom knife maker so I tell him what I want and he makes it for me. I have also made my own. ag

I had a good friend in Utah, Lynn Maxfield, who made knives. Sometime in the 1980s, I designed a 4" drop-point that he made for me. It's 440-C steel with a 59 Rockwell rating and has a balbinga wood handle with a brass guard, buttplate and decorative inserts. -TONY

I've been using the Browning FDT for years, and if I lost it today I'd order another one tomorrow. It folds up, has a gut hook a saw and a blade that takes an edge easily and stays sharp longer than most.

I bought a Bark River Mini Skinner and I love it! Worked well last year on my buddies Coues and I'm hoping to introduce it to a Bull Elk this weekend.
