what unit?

Recommended Posts

So to answer the original question of why not to give out unit numbers here is my perspective. I use to muzzle loader hunt a unit here for elk where I usually drew every year, 200 tags with about 500 applicants putting in for it. Not a very popular unit but a few elk in there to be able to get on them every year. I love hunting and chasing the animals even if I am not successful. I gave people information about the unit in general forums on different websites. Then there was the TV show where the bull was snuck up on and shot pretty close range during the archery hunt. Now there are still the same 200 tags with over 1500 people putting in for them. I haven't drawn that unit since so I went to another unit. Again not a very popular unit but enough elk in there to have some fun. So enjoy the stories, the unit shouldn't matter the least bit in the story.

So there was a TV show about your unit? You dont think that had more to do with it than you telling a few people online? How many of the neighboring units also went up in applications?

The stats just don't support the hyperbole of secrecy.

There are no secrets anymore.

Nope not in my unit but an adjoining unit. Everybody started applying for central NM due to the show saying that is where they were hunting public land. So if the TV show wasn't aired I would still be pulling tags for that unit. The difference between the TV show and the internet is the TV show is only aired certain times but the internet is accessible 24/7. They are now putting TV shows on the internet so you can search for it and find it in short order. As far as telling people on the internet in forums I really don't care as residents here get 84% of the tags so I am more than willing to help NR to have a decent hunt. Let's go back about 30 years before the internet took off and we did not have a deer draw here. Go to the local sporting goods store and buy a tag for anywhere in the state. My cousin killed a nice big mule deer and got his picture in the paper and gave an area description where the deer was killed. Next year there were about 200 more hunters in the area. So what difference does the unit make in the story? You tell me as I have my own ideas based on my own experiences.

Why do you think there are so many "I drew this unit and have never stepped foot in it so where do I start ?" Why are they applying for that unit? Usually it is post number 1 and you won't hear back from the OP after the hunt has happened.

"If you had a hot girl would you give every dude in town her phone number?"

Nope, but if I was bragging about it online I certainly wouldn't be afraid to say were I met her.

What happens when you state the unit you killed a high quality animal in is the large amount of new or inexperienced hunters out there will start applying for it thinking they to will be just as successful. If 500+extra people apply for that unit your draw odds just dropped. I have a favorite unit I like to deer hunt in and know I can kill a 25 inch heavy horned buck or BIGGER, if you applied for that same unit you would be lucky to see a forked horn let alone fill your tag. This is why we dont state the unit we like to hunt the most.

Well, it seems most of the arguments against posting the unit are based on hypothetical situations. I have yet to see an actual example of a unit being inundated with new apps due to internet posts. TV shows? Well of course that would ligh it up but that has nothing to do with my original post.

Now for those who just don't want to, that is fine, it is just my opinion that it adds to the story. Just my opinion.

And people apply for new units for many reasons. I apply for new units based on the EASE of getting drawn(for my kids) and the other variables like camping and fishing for the kids. I have NEVER based it on the quality of animal that someone else has taken in the unit. My brothers apply based on location. They just want to be close to home.

Lots of reasons people apply for new units. Lots of reasons they come on here asking about them too. I doubt they scour the internet looking for monster stories, apply for that unit, get drawn , and THEN come on here with their first post asking about that unit.

Guys on here worry to much about a unit or honey hole. If You know how to hunt You will find good animals in almost any unit. Go Hunt and have fun. Use Your instincts not a dang Camera thats been out all summer. Makes it more rewarding when You kill. Still no Camera for me at age 60 and have killed a butt load of animals. Some good ones too. Instinct Baby, Instinct. Have fun.............BOB!..........PS ,Its called Boot leather and Binos.

Seems like all your arguments are based on hypotheticals. Everything you have answered here is based on personal opinions and hypotheticals, just like we have. Where are the facts a unit number adds to the story? Just a hypothetical or personal opinion on why it adds to the story. I could care less where somebody kills an animal, the unit number adds nothing for me. Some of the best stories are when an animal is not killed. That is my opinion and it is completely different than yours.

So here are my hypothetical predictions on your ease of drawing units. A 200"+ mule deer, 100"+ coues deer, or 400"+ bull elk gets killed in your ease of drawing unit. Somebody states " I killed him in X unit", you are no longer going to have a ease of drawing unit. The other part of my prediction is people are going to start applying due to it is easy to draw and you will no longer have an easy to draw unit.

There are great animals in any unit you are willing to work hard in.Good luck to all tag holders. Next post will be a bash on someone who shot a spike that surely would have been a 180-200 buck.

Look at unit twenty one archery bull elk. This was a sleeper unit until a few guys started killing some great bulls. since 2012, the 1st and 2nd choice apps have almost doubled... The well known units it really has no effect, the unknown units can get hammered pretty quick. I have a few more examples, but if you do a little research, you can answer your own question.

Actually i already did the research and disproved manyb of the statements on here. I posted the facts. Not an opinion.

As i stated, i REALLY dont care what YOU do. Post or dont post the unit. I just find it amusing that so many people these days think there are secrets.

It is just a discussion.

And yes, it is my OPINION that i am more entertained when i know more details. That doesnt change the way i hunt or apply

But it is also entertaining to see the passion about it. Lol

Why would I? According to your posts that is the "correct" way to hunt. So long as I do it form the cab of a truck.

Silly me. I have been fooling myself all these years thinking it was about enjoying time in the outdoors with my friends and family.
