Used borax to preserve Velvet

Recommended Posts

We are obviously all past the velvet season but I figured I would post this up in case any of you considered it in the future.

2 1/2 days after I put this buck down I bought a storage tub from Walmart and put my antlers in it with borax and some salt. Turned out decent. Sprayed them with some Lysol when I pulled them out and brushed them off. They have been good and no odor ever since. My brother stripped his antlers and stained them with shoe polish. I'll probably do that next time it's just fun to remember them as they were when I shot it. In all I spent $14.

Looks good, any estimate in longevity?

Got in incontact with a guy who had done it back east. Said 8 years and his whitetail hasn't changed. The salt kills the bacteria and neutralizes the enzymes. Shouldn't change much
