New to AZ

Recommended Posts

Recently moved to Northern AZ from Texas and I'm looking to get some information on waterfowl hunting. Looks like thats about the only hunting I can afford to do here until I can claim residency for big game. I was wondering what lakes can and can't be hunted in the Flagstaff area. I've got my dog here with me currently and we've been running marks at Marshall and Mary.

Appreciate any help! Thanks.

Welcome, there are a few waterfowl hunters here that should chime in soon, I've never hunted them so I am of zero help.

LOL waterfowl hunting in AZ is vastly different than many other states. For a variety of reason: One there isn't that many great places to hunt ducks. So most people that have a good duck spot wont tell you(I'm lucky enough to have some access on some private property, that we do quite well at.) Most of the hunting around that Flagstaff area will be what we like to call Pond Jumping. Its pretty much all in the name, you drive to one of the hundreds of watering holes if their are ducks on the pond you figure out a game plan to Jump them off the pond and shoot them. Now obviously people put out decoys on the upper and lower lake mary but personally the number of ducks just don't warrant that type of set up. I used to blast ducks all day long off the shores or Mormon Lake but those days are long gone. One thing when Pond Jumping the ducks that you see there today probably wont be there tomorrow. Most of these birds are migrating south and just use the ponds as a recharge station, from what I have seen. 6B, 6A, 5B, have tons of tanks as a good starting point.

Ps Kinnikinick lake was the best lake when we would set up a blind with our dogs but I haven't been in that area for years hunting ducks.

PM me and I'd be glad to steer you in the right direction. Most people pond jump here but there are opportunities to decoy and work your dog. You will likely run into the same 20 people every season. It's a very small, but dedicated community. Don't be surprised if you get skunked every now and then. We are not on a major flyway...

Appreciate the feedback. I'm basically hamstrung until the first part of November. I'm heading back to Texas for a bow hunt and get a start on shipping my hunting essentials here. Trying to do all I can to become as prepared as I can for this waterfowl season as well as next years big game.
