Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 3, 2007 What vegetation do you prefer to hunt coues in? Why the preference? Any seasonal variation in your preference? Oaks? Pines? Ocotillo? Mesquite/Palo Verde? Pinon/juniper?
COOSEFAN Report post Posted September 3, 2007 Hey Doug, you forgot to add one more vegetation type............ JUNGLE! I found where Coues actually live in the jungle last week! I think that would fall under: "Which vegetation type do you like the LEAST!" JIM>
YOUNGGUNZ Report post Posted September 3, 2007 I like where the Ocotllio turn to Oaks. Right around the 4500 foot line. I love the hills that are desert on the south side and lush Oaks on the north.
IHunt2live Report post Posted September 3, 2007 Were ever I can find them! Lately I've been up in the Oak. When I'm hunting coues, or hunting in general I try to get away from everybody else so I end up hiking high and far.
Red Rabbit Report post Posted September 3, 2007 I generally look for the 4000'-5000' elevations and the bottom of the oaks. Still somewhat open for glassing and still have the beauty of the oaks and grass. Have also sought the shelter of the oaks during the occasional rain, or shade during the warmer days. COOSEFAN Report post Posted September 3, 2007 I'm an Ocotillo man myself......but I love the "fairly" open hillsides with Oak or Mesquite and some Ocotillo's mixed in for good measure As far as elevation, I like the lower stuff but I am not kidding I saw Whities last week at less than 200" elevation and they grow em' big down there! azcouesandelk Report post Posted September 3, 2007 I like hunting the ocotillos alot but tend to stay in the mesquite hillsides around 3500 to 4000 feet elevation. I like to hunt ocotillos the most becuase I just look for horozontal lines and I tend to see a good amount of deer. I also like the mesquite hillsides with grass because I always see a good amount of deer feeding.

CouesWhitetail Report post Posted September 5, 2007 My favorite are oak-juniper-grassland areas. My least favorite is probably chaparral (e.g., manzanita thickets). Amanda
BowNut Report post Posted September 5, 2007 Manzanita Thickets Yuck! I have spotted a few bucks in it for about 2 seconds! Also have spent some time on my hands and knees bowhunting up in your neck of the woods Amanda and asking myself what the (blank) I was doing in this crap!! I like ocotillo hill sides and grasslands with mesquite trees.
