Tres Report post Posted September 3, 2016 This year my Dad drew for a once in a lifetime oryx hunt in New Mexico and yesterday was opening day. After going through orientation at the missile range we didn't get to start hunting till noon. It was a rat race once orientation was over. People were running to their trucks, hauling a$$ down roads. With roughly 60 trucks it was Kinda stupid. We took our time and kept to our game plan. We saw trucks pulling over, one after another chasing oryx on the side of roads and taking different dirt roads with hopes of finding them. We kept going and before long there were no more trucks and other hunters around. We stalked a heard but my dad didn't get a shot. There were some big trophy bulls in this heard but my dad didn't get a shot off. He was mad at himself but my cousin and I told him it was ok and that he would get another chance. We moved locations and found a road that hadn't been traveled on so we took it. We hunted this area for a very short time when there one was staring at us. A bull all by himself. My dad pulls up the gun and the bull runs off. "$h!t !!!" We moved up a bit and it hadn't run off very far. With my cousin and I watching through our binos my dad squeezes the trigger, BAM!! The bull drops in its tracks. The three of us yelled and cheered. I smacked my Dads A$$ so hard my hand hurt! "Atta boy!!" Hugs and high fives all around. On the first day of the hunt, within hours of us starting, my Dad shot his once in a lifetime Oryx. By no means was this a monster oryx but it was what we were after, a " good representation of the species." It's nice to see my Dad excited, he is a hard working S.O.B. and deserved to get this opportunity. This hunt was a youth and a mobility impaired hunt, with My Dads knees being warn out he can't walk like he used to so for him to get a chance at a good bull was a blessing. It was a good hunt with good company. My Dad, my cousin and I have been hunting buddies for a while now, however with me living in AZ now we don't get to hunt together as much as we used to. We were happy he got his bull but it was bitter sweet because now the hunt was over. The length of the horns measured 33" and we have a good amount of great tasting game meat. We are truly blessed. Congrats Dad! I love you buddy.
