Hoss50 Report post Posted August 31, 2016 It has a 700R4/4l60E transmission and a 10 bolt rearend. Stranded proof is impossible. Not to mention IFS frontend. Build it so everything is in good shape and keep up good maintenance. That is the best you can do. Good tires and at minimum of 1 full size spare, tools, fluids, etc. I love old chevy's though. Do it right and it should treat you right.
TonyC Report post Posted August 31, 2016 Lol.. with the right approach and technique you can dang near take any vehicle ANYWHERE.. My truck broke down during a javi hunt and I resorted to my mini van.. yes.. a MINI VAN! So .. how did I get the van out in the mountains? ... I brought along very large wood beams to lay down over ditches and simply drove right over.. haha It was indeed, a PITA.. but, I was able to still get out there. The main point to my story is accommodate to what your vehicle may lack. It never hurts to have an extra tire, tools, some digging stuff, and whatever else you may have learned from MacGyver. muledeerarea33? Report post Posted September 1, 2016 I took a stock 1997 Z-71 to all the popular "rock crawler" places around Tucson. I took the easy part of the roads and made it everywhere. Even had a few guys who spent lots of money on their rigs dumb founded! "Rigs" I hate that word! Your in a pickup, it's not a rig! Either way. You don't need a lot to go anywhere, you just need to know how to drive. IFS will get you there and not spill your coffee. Just change the rims and your good!! Hoss50 Report post Posted September 1, 2016 You need a semi float or full float 14 bolt for the back. Get a 10 bolt front if you solid axle swap it. Just as strong as a 44 and factory parts are more common and cheaper. I have my beat up 85 K5 that I am going to rehab for a hunting rig. It already has a 14 bolt rear with Detroit locker and a 10 bolt front with chromo axles and a locker too.
