Powder choices for variety of weather

Recommended Posts

First off I'm new to reloading and Im loving it!! Right now I'm using RL-19 in my 300wsm and I'm shooting .5 moa in 100°. I'm looking for one powder that I can run on eirly desert hunts and late bull hunts. From what I have read I don't think I can count on RL-19 doing that for me. Would I be better off switching to an extreme powder like H4350?

I love Hodgdon's line of Extreme powders. For a .300WSM, I would think a little slower, like H4831SC or even H1000 depending on what bullet you are running.

Alliant has come out with a temperature stable line too. Like RL23.

I was in the same exact boat with RL22 in my 7mm RM. I went to H1000, found a load identical in accuracy, and ended up netting 50 fps as well. Glad I made the switch.

I couldn't find the Alliant RL23 or RL25 anywhere locally.

I'm using the ELD-X 212gr bullets.

I was in the same boat and looking for h4350 powder and it is hard to find. I,m using superformance hornady powder and it is NOT a temp stable powder but i do like that it gained 75 fps out of a 20 inch barrel over h4350. I hope it does not change too much with temp. If i find h4350 i will buy it and work up a load with it also.

Another vote for the "Extreme" powders. I have some of the new RL26 on standby after hearing about the manufactures goal with their new stuff.

I would like to try H4831SC so I could load my 270 with the same power or even H1000. But both of those powder aren't in the horady book for the 212gr bullet.. being new to reloading I don't know where to start or even if it's safe to shoot if it's not in the book. Any help with where to start would be fantastic!

I shoot H1000 in my 257 weatherby, and I am working on a load with it for my 7mm Rem Mag now.

I really like H1000.

Check hodgdon's website. There will no doubt be a load for a 210 or a 208 in there with the powders you selected.

This data will get you very close to a starting point but realize the bearing surface on the 212 is a bit longer and you will see pressure sooner. I would start slightly lower than the listed start points and listen to the gun as you watch for pressure signs.

Keep us posted, I would like to hear your results with that bullet.
