idgaf Report post Posted August 28, 2016 Anybody ever try it? See anything? I am planning a backpack hunt for next weekend and was considering moving it to the peaks from unit 27.

MuggyMan Report post Posted August 28, 2016 Only place in Arizona I've been above timberline is San Francisco peaks. Climbed Mt. Humphrey once. All I saw was lightening bolts and hail stones.
bonecollector777 Report post Posted August 28, 2016 I don't think we have many animals in the few places above the timberline in az.

Mike S Report post Posted August 28, 2016 I have seen more elk than deer just at and above the timberline on the peaks, but I have seen both. That would be a fun hunt, I'd give it a try. You can't overnight in the inner basin though.

You can't overnight in the inner basin though. Do you know if you can stay overnight just outside of the interior basin? I am leaning towards going (pending weather) that way over 27, apparently, all of the deer have died from diabetic comas from all the salt they have ingested. From what some of my friends have been telling me.
Mike S Report post Posted August 30, 2016 Here is the Forest Service link. Basically no camping or horses in the area draining into the inner basin. http://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/coconino/recreation/hiking/recarea/?recid=55110&actid=
oz31p Report post Posted August 30, 2016 It's too thick in the inner basin any way. You better off just out of the inner basin. If it were me I'd hit the peaks too. I love that place.
