Matapuercos Report post Posted August 27, 2016 Hello, I drew a tag for mule deer on 36A and I'm trying to decide which rifle to start with. I really want to get something with my 45-70 which I reload for, but I'm worried that the shots in that unit will be too far. Is this mostly the case for hunters in 36A? My other option is a 30-06 with a 3-9 scope. Thanks for your help.
wish2hunt Report post Posted August 27, 2016 Your shots can range from under a 100 to 400 or more. It all depends on how much you want to work at it.
Will K Report post Posted August 27, 2016 Take them both. Should be able to get it done with either rifle.
PRDATR Report post Posted August 27, 2016 Take both and use the 45-70. How far do the feel comfortable shooting it? I have a WT tag in there but have never been there so I can't comment on the terrain but it is probably similar to 36B and I have been there. I think Mulies are easier to get closer to. Plenty of successful archery hunters down there.
Big or Bust Report post Posted August 27, 2016 Really tough rifle hunt if you are looking for anything decent....shots could be far.
Matapuercos Report post Posted August 28, 2016 Any mulie with antlers within 150 yrds will be fair game for me. Even if it has crossed eyes and buck teeth. Well it will be a buck with teeth but you know what I mean.

Big or Bust Report post Posted August 28, 2016 If that's the case I'd try to glass the doe herds which are significantly easier to find. There will be little guys with them....
border hunter Report post Posted August 28, 2016 You could hunt the flats with the 45-70.
