stanley Report post Posted August 18, 2016 Archery elk hunt is three weeks out, and I am suddenly finding myself getting a little giddy!! Can't scout this weekend, as I'll be out of state getting my middle son settled-in the dorm for his Freshman year of college. Plan being back up in the White Mountains the weekend of the 27th/28th, then again over Labor Day weekend (I hope....) though. So, is it too early to ask? Anyone hearing a peep yet? S. Alpinebullwinkle Report post Posted August 18, 2016 Yes. The other day, August 15 I got into a herd of cows really quacking with excitement. The reason was two bulls were bugling following them from their beds. Almost every year around August 16-17 the elk seem to have a vocal pre-function function warming up the opera. Then they go quiet until about Labor Day. This year seems normal in that respect.......but not necessarily considering the horn rubbing I guess.
