4Falls Report post Posted August 17, 2016 I'm ill-prepared as usual. But I'll give it a try anyway. Don't really even know where I'm going to go or how I'm going to hunt when I get there. But its still better than NOT hunting.
Jnj13 Report post Posted August 17, 2016 We’ll be headed out for what I consider a scouting trip for the fall hunts. With our bows just in case. Question for anyone with experience. My son has mind set, if we harvest a deer, on entering in Pope and Young. I see the appeal of getting a certificate for a youth hunter etc. 70" is what it takes. I’m so new to couse and hunting just curious how hard is it to field judge a 70” buck in velvet? is that a small 3x3? Also per the ‘rules of fair chase’ is use of radios/ phones etc to help guide hunter to deer prohibited? Thanks
GreyGhost85 Report post Posted August 17, 2016 most decent 3x3 bucks with eye guards will score 70. this buck i shot about 7-8 years ago scored right around 70 if i remember right
standman Report post Posted August 18, 2016 4 stands worth of cameras failed to produce any big bucks for the first time in years, but also haven't been able to hunt August in those few years so I'm ready to spot and stalk new country and definitely looking forward to the change of pace. Sounds like my story this year. I'm probably not going to do much the first week or so. Brian

JustinB Report post Posted August 18, 2016 Wasnt going to do it this year but checked a new camera that I set up for the January hunt. Well 17 different buck have been hitting it each day over the past 20 days. Got a stand set last night. Now just have to not shoot the little guys and wait out the bigger ones. Crazy thing. On the camera in 20 days there was only 1 doe and 2 bears. Everything else was whitetail bucks. I have never had that happen on a camera. Sounds like someone needs to share some trail cam pics! I'm headed up thursday afternoon for 3 days in a ground blind. Hoping to be able to just put up a pic of one of the bigger ones dead! Just cant let myself shoot a little one. My finger gets itchy when I have a legal animal in fornt of me.

mattys281 Report post Posted August 18, 2016 I thought I was ready until yesterday when I went out & started shooting the freshly refletched arrows I built on Monday & it looked like it was raining fletchings the way those things were flying off. Apparently my glue was too old, so I had to make a run to cabelas & get some fresh stuff & was up til midnight last night refletching again. sometimes I really hate being a procrastinator. Curious, how old was it do you think? FWIW, Goat Tuff has been excellent to me for both inserts and fletchings, as well as several home projects. My current bottle is only a year old but still strong as new.

My current bottle is only a year old but still strong as new. Goat tuff is a good product, I use it for inserts. I've been using the bohning platinum crap for fletchings on the last couple batches as it was recommended for blazers, but frankly I don't think that even when the glue is fresh it is as good as the AAE instant stuff, so I went back to it yesterday. I've been using it for years and should've just stuck with it. I think my glue was probably about a year or a little more old. It can last a while if you keep it in the fridge, but mine had been at room temp and it seemed a little tacky. I should've just tossed it and bought some more, but it was late at night and I was impatient. This is what I get for it.
StickFlicker Report post Posted August 19, 2016 JNJ13, Yes, a small 3 x 3 would likely meet the 70" minimum. And yes, the use of radios or phones to guide a hunter to an animal violates the rules of fair chase for every records program. Also consider entering the state bowhunting records program, Bowhunting in Arizona (www.bowhuntinginarizona.com). The minimum for entry to that program is 65 (but they do deduct 2.5% from the score on velvet entries, so would need to score a little higher than 65 to net 65). Kids under 18 can enter their trophy for no charge.
