PPU BRASS - WILL LOAD BUT NOT RE-LOAD AFTER FIRING

Recommended Posts

I thought I shared the following experience.

I purchased PPU 30/30 Win brass from Cabela's. 100 count was on sale.

Turned out that this brass is good for "loading" only. Believe me, you will not be able to reload it after you fire.

Let's be more specific; rifle is Henry H009B, 30/30 Win. Round is Hornady 150 gr. and I used 32.5 gr. of H4895 (The high recommended is 34 gr.).

During reloading I noticed the following: Not much change in length however the bullet would not sit and over cramping will cause the cartridge not to chamber. I try to be very precise when it comes to numbers. I checked all the tolerances and turned out to be that the brass was wider overall by 0.0025" - 3". Hence, wider neck that will not hold the bullet and wider body that will not chamber.

I would like to hear other opinions but I would not recommend PPU 30/30 brass and these are going into the garbage.

Best,

Ben

Are you FL sizing?

First time using the brass?

First time using the dies?

Same issue with other brand of brass?

Possibly have a minimum chamber and loose tolerance die. Brass might be hard, so it is springing back a bit after sizing. Try annealing the neck and top of case.

Have you had this problem with other brass?

I have not experienced other brands, yet.

Are you FL sizing?

NO

First time using the brass?

THE PPU BRAND, YES - ISSUE IS AFTER THEY HAVE BEEN FIRED ONCE

First time using the dies?

YES - HORNADY. HOW WOULD THIS HAVE AN EFFECT?

Same issue with other brand of brass?

STILL CHECKING ON IT

Possibly have a minimum chamber and loose tolerance die. Brass might be hard, so it is springing back a bit after sizing. Try annealing the neck and top of case.

WILL TRY...

FL size it, and try different dies if that doesn't work. I am. It a huge fan of hornady dies. I have a few sets and like even the standard RCBS dies better.

I tried 5 different brands, including PPU. I would like to report that FL sizing was needed and the result is satisfactory.

Now, I will say that the case expansion on PPU was larger than the rest. Which are: Hornady, R-P, Winchester & FC.

I did apply annealing to the neck.

Cheers,

Ben
