Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted August 28, 2007 Got my 300 Wby Mag well on its way to being ready for deer season. Had the trigger re-worked and put my new Huskemaw Optics scope on and we settled on a bullet/load that shoots well. The load is a Berger 168 VLD w/ 82 grs. of IMR 7828. I had to put together some drop date so that they could build the turret for the scope (included in the scope cost). I got to zero at 200 yds and then set up two targets at 511 yds and 994yds. I have never shot that far and don't even consider myself a shooter (with a rifle)... but I fired 5 rounds at each distance and pulled a group of less than 4.5" at 511 yds. and about a 10"-12" group at 994 yds. ... I tried to repeat my 1000 yd group with a second five rounds but I started to get a bit of breeze and I think I was getting punchy..... I'll never shoot a 1000 yds again, but it was cool to pull a group at all at that range. Once I get the new turret I will get her tuned up and try to improve on consistantly shooting sub MOA groups @ 400-650 yds. I also have a question for you all....... When you get tuned up for a rifle hunt what kind of group do feel you have to shoot at any distance, to consider it an efficient distance for you to shoot game??? Thanks, CnS
Red Rabbit Report post Posted August 28, 2007 Were you shooting off the bench, or from the Stoney point tripod?
Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted August 28, 2007 Were you shooting off the bench, or from the Stoney point tripod? For my drop data I was shooting from a table.... once I get the new turret and have it all tuned up..... Then I will move back to shooting off the sticks. That will be the real, tell.... to see if I can shoot the gun as good as it should be shot..... I thinkt hat my technique is getting better, so hopefully I can keep them tight. Thanks, CnS Minute of angle at any distance is more than adequate... 1 inch at 100, 2 at 200 3 at 300 and so on! I would hope that out to about 200 or 300 1/2 MOA is obtainable. looks good Gino! now your like me, no excuses for missing!

Coues 'n' Sheep Report post Posted August 28, 2007 How do you like that tripod? Used it much in the field? Amanda I have not used it while hunting, but I have been having clients use it with 100% success standing and sitting. This is my first year using the back support arm.... I have to spend some time with that.... it is suppose to be great once you get use to it.... but I need to try to get comfortable with it before I make up my mind..... firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 28, 2007 I tried shooting with dougs and it didnt work out too well with the design of the stock on my 270wsm. it seems like it would be rock solid though!
longshooter Report post Posted August 28, 2007 How do you like those berger VLD's ? I have heard good things about them regarding ballistics and knock down power but also heard they jam in your magazines because of length ? I think they need to be toucjing your landings ? I have heard good things about them regarding ballistics and knock down power but also heard they jam in your magazines because of length ? I think they need to be toucjing your landings ? Weatherby's are free bore... no matter what you will never get them to touch the lands.... but they shoot better out of this gun than the Barnes TSX or MRX, or the Nosler Balistic tip. Hope to see how they work on Coues Deer in October... I have had no problem with them jambing... so far.
firstcoueswas80 Report post Posted August 28, 2007 The thing about the VLD's isnt that they jam, its that they wont fit in the magizine, so it basically turns the bolt action rifle into a single shot because they are to long.

That's great shooting Gino and a great rifle! How much for the scope? Shorty..... the scope will run you a $1000.00 @ Best of the West...... PM me if you are thinking of buying one. Casey..... no prob on feeding shells from the mag to the chamber..... so far. Redneck.... The gun is a factory Mark V. I sent it to a place in Michigan called Answer Products, 5-6 years ago and had them go through it top to bottom.... install the break and pad (called the Answer System). I just had my local gunsmith redo the trigger (lighter) and put the new scope on it. Thanks for all the input, everyone! CnS
